Maybe it's harsh but I'd let him go now, so you aren't doing it during the Christmas holiday and feeling extra super shitty. From what I know of you over the years, your family is going to be super extra shitty to you during Christmas and you are going to not have the emotional reserves for handling him dying if it's around then. I don't want to see it pile on you and make you hurt yourself.
