I always get irritated when people insist/insinuate that there are traditional roles in relationships (especially two men, for some reason). Questions like 'who's the wife?' drive me nuts. Probably because while it's meant as a joke, it shows ignorance and lack of respect of the two people. (Similar to the 'what a waste' comment I hear sometimes about gay men.)
The one time the 'what a waste' doesn't bother me as much is when the person who says it was clearly crushing on the person who was being talked about. In which case it translates to 'I have no hope, this makes me sad', which I am a bit more sympathetic with.
