I've been wanting to do one of these for ages, but just never found the right one. Then this one popped up in
krys33's journal and I couldn't resist stealing it.
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
A lot more. Especially since it had been a year or so since I had written anything.
What's your favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
I Can Be Your Hero (Kandy). This one just makes me smile and gives me that warm fuzzy feeling inside. There are all kinds of flaws in this one, but I don't care, I love it! I had such a blast writing it and it's the first fic I wrote that made me believe that I could take on the characters of Andy and Kelly. I had written a Kandy fic prior to that, but it was really just a flash in time, a litte scene that you'd see on the show, so it was nice to branch out of that and build a foundation for their friendship.
Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
Oh definitely. The first writing risk was trying to tackle a pairing that was created purely by fandom, and the author who started the craze was so incredible that anything I would ever write for Kandy would pale in comparison, and it does, but I'm glad I went ahead and took a stab at the pairing anyway. They are so fun to write for. Another risk was
Scattered Memories (Daniel/Betty). I had never written anything about old age before, let alone alzheimer's, but I really wanted a way to show what Daniel and Betty's life together would be like, and this idea popped into my head. It's a very abstract piece, and I was afraid that it would be confusing since I never come right out and say what's going on, but I wanted the readers to feel Daniel's confusion, and I wanted them to feel his calm whenever a memory would come back to him. It was just a very different piece for me stylistically, especially since the memories don't come to him in chronological order, and I'm a very chronological focused person. I learned that this method was a very effective way of showing Daniel and Betty's entire marriage in only a few small glimpses. And I learned that I can indeed write a tragedy.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
Well, I really want to finish
There's a First Time for Everything, especially since it takes place in season 3 and that season is now long gone. But that's the beauty of writing a pairing that isn't canon, you don't have to adhere strictly to the show. But I have modified some of my ideas to fit with season 4 too. Also, I really want to get back into writing Daniel/Betty. I started a bit at the end of 2007, but I want to write more. They are the couple that runs through my veins. I have so many scenerios on how and why they should end up together, and it always baffles me when people say that they don't belong together. Have they been watching the same show as me? Because Daniel and Betty should never, ever be separated. The show started with them, and it should end with them. I just can't see their friendship continuing if they both marry other people and Betty moves on somewhere else to achieve her dreams. It can't end like that!!! You can't separate these two! They connect to each other like they connect to no one else.
My Best Story of the Year
In terms of writing, definitely
Scattered Memories and
Abandoned. In terms of popularity, that would be
Just Betty (which I started in 2006) and
Cruel, Cruel April Fools.
Story Most Underappreciated by the Universe, in My Opinion
The One Night Stand (Michael/Phyllis) which is understandable, and
The First Morning (Kandy).
Most Fun Story
Definitely
I Can Be Your Hero and
Andy Bernard: Not a Proust Scholar.
Most Sexy Story
Hmm... I don't know if I'd call it sexy (more like scary), but
The One Night Stand had a tiny mention of rumpy pumpy action. And there was some pretty steamy kisses in
Just Betty, but nothing more than that.
Hardest Story to Write
Probably
Cuppa Noodles (Kandy) since I had to write to a prompt and tried desperately to make it somewhat interesting. Also,
Cruel, Cruel April Fool's was kind of hard because I was trying to come up with an angsty April Fool's Day fic for Daniel and Betty.
Biggest Surprise
Scattered Memories was definitely my biggest surprise. Don't know where it came from. It just popped into my head out of nowhere one day when I was taking a shower. I wasn't even thinking about Ugly Betty at the time. And of course writing for Kandy was something that I had never expected, especially since I didn't even imagine them together until I read
dollsome's fic. In fact, I never thought that I would attempt Office fic at all since so many of the writers are so extremely talented. I'm not as intimidated in the UB fandom, especially since I was one of the first people to write fic for that fandom. I think Just Betty was the 10th UB story ever created, and only the second multi-chapter one. So I'm a veteran there, if you can consider one year a veteran!
In other news, someone on MTT pointed me in the direction of every single Dexter episode online!!!! I get to watch season 2 without having to download a butt load of GBs! I am so incredibly happy. And now I can watch that last episode of season 1 without having to wait for my DVD to arrive.
