Oh, you guys, Merlin just broke my heart. I cried twice. I don't recall ever crying at Merlin before (well, besides the billowing capes scene, but that's only because I smile so hard that tears form in my eyes). OH MY GOD! Such a magnificent episode. Last week's was the epitome of comedy, and this one was drama all the way. Let me just say that the Merlin/Gaius scenes in this ep were beyond beautiful. The Merlin/Gwen team up was spectacular. Uther's turmoil was fantastic. My only complaint is that I wanted more from Morgana, especially since I was expecting this to be the episode where Uther starts to have his suspicions about her, but alas, she was kind of just an afterthought. *sigh* Anyway, Uther/Gaius. I must get this out of my system:
Uther... actually came to apologize. Sort of. In his own arrogant it-totally-wasn't-my-fault way. AND GAIUS FINALLY DUMPED HIS UNGRATEFUL ASS!
OH MY GOD. I cannot believe I broke into tears over this. But it was so tragic! The music was so sorrowful! Uther was so well meaning! He was so sure that all would be forgiven as per usual and he'd have his wife back, but Gaius finally, FINALLY spoke his mind. "You just tried to KILL me, you motherfucker! FRIENDSHIP OVER." And Uther gets that look that is so utterly vulnerable and lost, and you just want to hug him even though you know he does these terrible things and Gaius is finally getting a backbone and doing the right thing, but he's Uther, poor, pathetic, slightly sadistic Uther! And Gaius has to turn away because he knows he'll fall for that vulnerable look in Uther's eyes and his resolve would crumble and forgive the bastard yet again, but NO MORE! NO MORE, DAMN IT! And then Uther goes walking out, his gait not quite as grand as usual, and it's the most heartbreaking image ever. GOD! WHY DOES HE HAVE THIS POWER OVER ME? I'm supposed to be mad at him for almost killing his best and only friend! He's abused Gaius for years, I'm supposed to be whooping with joy for Gaius, and instead I am crying for Uther because he is slowly losing each and every person he cares about. Today it was Gaius, next week it'll be Arthur, and he's been losing Morgana from the beginning (and yet, somehow, she'll be the last one that's still holding onto him). Oh, Uther. He really screwed the pooch on this one. I did love that he really didn't want to kill Gaius, and that he was defending him quite devotedly for a short while. But this episode showed how easily influenced Uther is by more overbearing personalities than his own. I was kind of hoping this ep would reveal that Uther's war on magic was perpetuated by this witchfinder dude (he could have easily taken advantage of a heartbroken Uther).
Anyway, this ep was a hard one for Uther. He's so... ARGH! I know he is quite an idiot a lot of the time, but he's so, so broken and lost and vulnerable, and he just wants to love someone and be loved in return, but he's so afraid to trust people that he ends up pushing away every single person that matters to him, and despite all the stupid/crazy/violent things he does, I can't help but love him with my whole heart. *sigh*
Also, because it was the only bit of Uther/Morgana in the entire episode:
DO YOU SEE HOW SHE IS LOOKING TO UTHER TO ~SAVE~ HER? DO YOU? Though, I am curious as to why Morgana didn't just grab that dude's arm and twist out of his hold and grab his knife. Morgana was uncharacteristically helpless in this episode, which I will just chalk up to her being frightened of her magical powers being discovered (though, it still doesn't explain why she played damsel in distress during this bit, but I don't care, because she was ~LOOKING~ AT UTHER).
