Once Upon A Time

To anyone that didn't know him, Inu Yasha would have appeared to be napping in the corner of Sango and Miroku's hut. But he knew Kagome was aware of his heavy-lidded gaze, resting peacefully on her as she talked and gestured, holding Sango and Miroku's brood spellbound with her storytelling skills.

He couldn't help but smirk a little bit at Kagome's adjustment of her current story to make it appropriate for young ears. She was retelling one of their first adventures together, when they discovered that Miroku didn't always lead with his smaller head, and was well aware of the dangers of following strange women to their beds. In Kagome's retelling, the hime offered Miroku an expensive trinket, and the little ones accepted that readily. They knew their father worked hard, and bargained with quick wit to get them the things they needed.

Her eyes sparkled, her hands moving rapidly to enhance the visual effects of her words. It looked so natural to see her surrounded by children, and Sango and Miroku's brood had loved their "Aunt Kagome" from the moment she returned.

She had even gotten the twins to leave his ears alone by pinching theirs, and they were old enough to understand that if tugging on their ears hurt, it would hurt him, too. Not that he really cared. It wasn't a hand in the gut. But it was still a relief.

Said ears flicked and he took a deep breath. He was nervous, but he was trying not to let it show. Once the children were safely in their beds, he would confide in his wife what his nose was telling him.

This time, it wouldn't be Sango and Miroku adding to the village population.
