One delight after Kagome's return was Inuyasha's greater willingness to talk: either he had been getting used to talking more during the three years, or had stored up so many words that could not be said during that time, that they had forced their way out during the first few weeks, and gotten him into the habit.
Nevertheless, he still went inarticulate occasionally, retreating to corner or roof or tree...
... ... ...
Kagome had woken up, to find Inuyasha gone. Brushing off her chagrined attempt to apologize, Kaede fed the three of them, while relaying her thoughts from the night before.
She accompanied Kaede and Shippo as they left, noticing-with relief-the clear sky and warmer wind. A thump made her look around. Inuyasha stood, hair disheveled, ears half-back, holding out a bundle. "Rabbit."
Rabbit completely reduced to bloody shreds. Without comment, Kagome prepared a stew, setting the pot at the edge of the fire. Retrieving a comb, she approached him. "May I?"
Glancing at the comb, he moved forward. Kneeling, Kagome started combing his hair. She loved doing it; loved the feel of the silky strands, and more, loved the way he responded; relaxing, smiling, sometimes making little noises of pleasure.
He responded finally with an explosive sigh as his shoulders sagged. "Better?" He turned, caught her and pulled her into his lap. For a moment, he only stared at her, before kissing her, hungrily and demanding. Flinging her arms around his neck, Kagome responded just as fiercely. She was unsurprised when he stood up, kicked the folded fouton into an open position, and then gently lay her down, watching her with avid need. Smiling, she crooked one finger, and welcomed his embrace.
Not everything needed to be said in words, after all.
