The connection between a heavy feed of on-screen violence and personal violence seems obvious, but I think it is more complex than that. Japanese entertainment can be extremely violent, but Japan does not have the violence in society we have.

Karen? What on earth are you doing up? :)

I agree that there are multiple factors that influence a person's violent tendencies, biological, social, and psychological. I'm currently writing an essay about this, to tie in with the discussion started on Masonesque about whether anyone is born evil. The psychological studies on children watching violent television are fascinating.

I have heard many theories for why violence in America is so much higher than in other countries, but no definitive answers. If you have ideas, I would love to hear them.

With a calm and dispassionate voice and a hymn playing in the background, Dena Schlosser confessed to the unthinkable, telling a 911 operator she'd cut off the arms of her baby girl.

Schlosser, who had a history of postpartum depression, had been investigated on child neglect allegations earlier this year, but Texas Child Protective Services had recently closed a seven-month investigation, concluding that Schlosser did not pose a risk to her children. Neighbors said she seemed to be a loving, attentive mother.
“There were never any indications of violence with this family,” agency spokeswoman Marissa Gonzales said. “The children had always been healthy, happy and cared for.”

ORLANDO, Florida (AP) -- Days before a 4-year-old girl died from a blow to the head in a filthy motel room shared with five siblings and her parents, the state child welfare agency was told about her living conditions but declined to investigate, according to documents released Wednesday.
Sheriff's deputies found dirty diapers and spoiled food littering the motel room, urine-soaked mattresses and baby bottles containing moldy milk and what may have been maggots.

An Illinois draft plan to screen children and pregnant women for mental illness has stirred controversy and raised questions about some elements of President Bush's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health (NFC) report. The Illinois draft screening guidelines, issued in July by the Illinois Children's Mental Health Partnership (ICMHP), were based on recommendations made in 2003 by the Bush-appointed NFC, which proposed a far-ranging reform of state mental health care systems. One of the five key recommendations in the report was:
In a transformed mental health system, the early detection of mental health problems in children and adults--through routine and comprehensive testing and screening--will be an expected and typical occurrence.
