As soon as I hit the Con part I was like ANGEL OMG ANGEL IT'S ANGEL AND BUFFY AGAIN and got really excited. But basically I couldn't put that damn book DOWN it was so freaking addicting I absolutely adored it and especially the part where they are sitting in the offices and they are all staring at Con who is covered in light from the window and she just sits there and then BURSTS INTO TEARS. I WAS DYING OF AWESOME. It like was the best part of the book to me it was so amazing and intense and OMG. LoL. I am so freaking glad you sent me that, because I am now making everyone I know read it. I shall probably send you the Raven Ring as my book of choice, since it's my favorite book ever!! :D :D

I read one of Robin McKinley's books and didn't like it at all, but Sunshine sounds really good. I think I'll get it out of the library...

As for Kushiel's Dart - I know what you mean about not understanding why her masochism makes her a candidate for a spy. The only thing I can thing of is that people don't think of 'sex-peddlers' as being very important, so as they said a couple times in KD, she won't really be noticed and she can hear more things.

I haven't finished KD yet, but my sister is halfway into the fourth book (Kushiel's Scion) and she loves them. As soon as I get through my other books I will finish Kushiel...

I agree with your last comment about Phedre's character. The narcissism is definitely the most obvious quality that keeps her from the dreaded land of Mary-Sues.

What you said earlier about the character Sunshine not being some awesome ass-kicking heroine - I love books like that, where the character is really real. Scared, and not super-strong, and just trying to survive, I guess? (Like Meg Rosoff's Just In ( ... )

I definitely recommend Sunshine if you are into realistic, scared, pretty-flawed but still-likeable heroines. RMcK is very good at that type, almost such that it's an archetype for her - all of her books are like that. But Sunshine is better. The main character is special, yes, but she's also just circumstantially special, more of the "right place, right time, oh fuck why did this happen to me" type as well.

Sunshine's terrified of herself, of what she got into, and the way that she talks herself through it and - yes, in the end, becomes an actual hero - is really some of the best storytelling ever. Yeah, she's whiny. Yeah, she's scared. But that makes it better to read about her. I mean, she makes mistakes! I GUESS HEROINES AREN'T SUPPOSED TO DO THAT. Or something.

Anyway, do you recall what other RMcK book you read? To me, at least, Sunshine is quite different than the others, so I still recommend giving it a try.
