As for Kushiel's Dart - I know what you mean about not understanding why her masochism makes her a candidate for a spy. The only thing I can thing of is that people don't think of 'sex-peddlers' as being very important, so as they said a couple times in KD, she won't really be noticed and she can hear more things.
I haven't finished KD yet, but my sister is halfway into the fourth book (Kushiel's Scion) and she loves them. As soon as I get through my other books I will finish Kushiel...
I agree with your last comment about Phedre's character. The narcissism is definitely the most obvious quality that keeps her from the dreaded land of Mary-Sues.
What you said earlier about the character Sunshine not being some awesome ass-kicking heroine - I love books like that, where the character is really real. Scared, and not super-strong, and just trying to survive, I guess? (Like Meg Rosoff's Just In ( ... )

Sunshine's terrified of herself, of what she got into, and the way that she talks herself through it and - yes, in the end, becomes an actual hero - is really some of the best storytelling ever. Yeah, she's whiny. Yeah, she's scared. But that makes it better to read about her. I mean, she makes mistakes! I GUESS HEROINES AREN'T SUPPOSED TO DO THAT. Or something.
Anyway, do you recall what other RMcK book you read? To me, at least, Sunshine is quite different than the others, so I still recommend giving it a try.
