Yeah, funny how that works when you're constantly anesthetized, McCoy scoffs as he digs through to find a fresh enough body. They drove through the sand, taking their time.
“-And the fact of the matter is before I met you, Doctor, I relied on myself for safety.”
“Then it’s a miracle you’re even here.” A hawk swooped down a hundred feet in front of them. There was nothing from them to it but flat land and cactus plants, and McCoy knew exactly what Spock isn’t saying.
He sighed and let the sounds of dusk fill the craft as Spock drove them back to Jim and the others. An animal howled, as distant as the caves but sound carries far out here. Bones savored the sound; in space everything was muffled, another unearthly reminder.
And then, about half an hour from the beacon when he knows he only has a little time with Spock cornered, he just blurts it out.

“I.” McCoy had to process that. His eyes followed the landscape zipping by as he rapidly tried to translate Logic into Standard. “What’s changed in your thinking, then? How are your actions any less reckless?”
“I did not say they were any less reckless,” Spock condescended, “but my risk is lessened because they are calculated risks. The tactical advantage is mine in those situations, having planned for them and thought out my course of action.”
