It's the middle of gamma shift, if anyone had cared to note the time. Usually he tries to instill good habits into his staff; but after the marathon surgeries they pulled off today, Leonard figures he'll let punctuality slip just this once. He released them all hours ago, so he's the only one left-- him and his idiot of a captain, laid up yet again after a gruesome encounter planetside. Figures.

From his seat on the edge of Jim's bed, Leonard lets his eyes slip down to his face. Of course, Jim's lip has split open again, and he moves for his tricorder. The fool boy would smile even in his drug-addled sleep. He can't help but cause Leonard trouble, but the doctor's come to see it as more a loving gesture than anything. It's all he can do, really, all anyone can do: just accept the pull of Jim Kirk's orbit as he spins by

There was a certain order in the universe, he'd found, and he enjoyed knowing he could count on certain facts to always be true. First, Jim Kirk and booze always lead to long nights for McCoy. Second, holiday parties on the Enterprise were to be avoided at all costs for the sake of his sanity. And third, that any combination of the first two would always lead to some spectacular disaster.

"So, was this the Academy for you?" Mira asked in her usual curious way, tilting her head towards the body between them. She was the only one still sober enough to walk a straight line.

"Hardly," McCoy grimaced as he shouldered more of the weight. "Back then, I would have left him and let him find his own way back."

"Right, I'd forgotten you've become soft in your old age."

"And I'll remind you to not tell the rest of the crew." They shared small smiles over Jim's head
