She should have known, before she even saw the frightened cadets running through the halls, that their commander was, once again, taking his aggression out on the unfortunate piece of wood whittled into what would later become his desk. After all, it was the year anniversary of Rinoa leaving the Garden- and much as she knew he hated to admit, Squall definitely remembered the date- and things had been proceeding slightly less smoothly than they all had anticipated with Martine and Galbadia.
She sighed and pushed her chair back, moving into the hallway of the second floor where the whispers surrounded her senses.
Smack.
The elevator ride seemed longer than usual, as if the contraption itself had been slowed to deliberately aggravate her further. How was she supposed to teach a class when the very walls of Balamb sounded like they were coming down around her?
With a ding, the doors opened, and she stepped into the commander's office.
Smack.

It's been six weeks since Martine hired her as a bodyguard; six weeks, and there hasn't been a whisper of an assassination attempt. Poor girl must be so strung-out, Irvine knows; she takes her work so seriously. Even if the rest of them wouldn't cry much if Martine died - especially if, in that case. He's sure that's why Martine hired one of them, anyway.
Six weeks, and counting; the money keeps rolling in, and Martine keeps Quistis. It's almost like she's the hostage. Squall's getting concerned, and for Squall to be concerned, there's probably something wrong.
He finally makes his way across the room with his Galbadian counterpart, the ones that hired him as a bodyguard; luckily for Irvine, he's way less well- ( ... )
