I think the Brits enjoy the tiny sufferings produced by their needlessly baroque fixtures. It's a way for them to hold on to their bygone era of ascendancy in some meaningless, yet ever-present way. If they can't rule the world, at least they can crap like those who did.

There is such a thing as having too much history.
