cultural divide in IM: presence vs. communication.

Interesting article. I definitely find myself on the "presence" side of things, and I have the similar frustrations with people who use IM as a more traditional "communication" tool. Though I hope I'm not overly rude to people who use the medium differently.

communication, technology

You know? That article may have begun to convert me toward the "presence" camp. Although I've never been much of a multi-tasker...even for short comments. I wonder how I'd handle it.

Nice article.

I proudly admit that I'm one of the communication people. According to the article, that makes me backward and "uncomfortable" with the technology. I also generally can't listen to a phone ring (however, I will turn the ringer off and not answer). Why? It's because I'm easily distracted, and I love conversing with people. So I can't handle the "presence" mode of life. I don't want "presence". I shut myself off from the world. The phone, likewise, cannot be left ringing because it interupts my peaceful little world. But, like you, I do what I can to accomodate those who have the "presence" mode of life. Sometimes I think maybe they (and you in particular) might benefit from shutting it all off every once in a while.
