places to eat and things to do

I am visiting a friend in socal in October. We know that we are going to spend one day in Santa Barbara and one day in San Diego. In each place we have plans for after dinner, but the rest of the day is pretty free. Any suggestions?

San Diego has a lot of cool things to do. You can't go wrong with the Wild Animal Park or Balboa Park. I also really like the tide pools in the area; I saw my first wild octopus there, as well as a bunch of anemones and urchins and stuff.

For San Diego:

Depending on when in October, come meet Sprat :)

Or the zoo, always a good bet, especially if you're downtown. Old Town is full of fun mexican/mission type stuff. Balboa park (where the zoo is) also has all kinds of other quirky museums, and a little artists village that's fun. There's also the international houses in balboa park.

It is going to be the second weekend in October, so I think that I may be a little too early to see him :)
