Aimee Mullins, who had to have both legs below the knees amputated because of a birth defect and went on to become a nationally ranked college runner, gave a TED talk once; the concluding, errr, conclusion was, "Whimsy matters".

It's quite useful in realizing that nearly everything can be laughed at, or at least looked at with a certain ... distance.
