heh, that's kinda hilarious. also today my stats professor and TA almost got in a tiff because the former said she had been doing some stats in excel and the latter very vehemently said, and said again, and a third time, that you should never do stats in excel because it's wrong. "yeah, it can be a pain" says prof; "no, i mean it DOES IT WRONG", etc.

also, it makes me sad that i'm struggling with my stats class because we have to do these things by hand, given that they freely acknowledge that when we're grownups we'll never actually use the reasoning or arithmetic and just ask SAS (or a statistician) for answers.

Actually, they aren't that hard...I even roll my own stats algorithms every now and then (such things happen when you're doing research related to statistical mechanics). Now, getting those critical values that you compare against, on the other hand...that is where the books/the internet really come in handy.

Otherwise, if you need more firepower than Excel, there's always MATLAB (or Octave, the FOSS equivalent)...

Having never taken statistics, I haven't the slightest idea what a confidence interval is, but this made me giggle kind of a lot. :)
