Hmm... Well I'm not sure I can think of a single one, because as you say older ones are often eclipsed. I think the earliest books I can think of that fit the quote are the Animorphs series, which I still haven't left behind! And then there was LotR, but the Silmarillion eclipsed that. And for French lit, I would have to say La Peste.

I taught myself to read out of an encyclopedia of wildlife. So, weirdly, the book that had the most individualizing impact on my life was nonfiction, and I was quite young.
