Fixed (Inara/Kaylee)

Dec 03, 2006 08:00

I saw this listed on the femslash_today unporn challenge and having recently seen the entirety of the Firefly series and it's subsequent feature film I figured I'd try my hand at the most subtexty of pairings on the show.

It's a short little drabble but try to enjoy!

TITLE: Fixed
SERIES: Firefly
AUTHOR: Dreiser
EMAIL: dreiser7@yahoo.com
MY WEBSITE: http://www.dreiser.net/
CONTENT: F/F romance. Inara/Kaylee.
SUMMARY: Kaylee can't help but want to fix things and it's up to Inara to let her know some things are beyond repair.
DISCLAIMER: I own nothing but my residual guilt over how I left my most recent job.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: The challenge was this, "Firefly, Kaylee/Inara, repairs." And that's what I had to work with. Most would use repairs to mean Kaylee perhaps in the engine room tending to Serenity and maybe some naughty goings on but I thought about her tendency to want to make things right for the people around her. Hence this drabble of a fic.

All her life Kaylee had been good at fixing things. Things that had mechanical parts, that is. She could usually just take one look at them and know what was wrong. Although sometimes she did like to open things up and take a long hard gander just because it could be awfully fun to tinker around.

People weren't like mechanical parts though. Fixing them wasn't easy at all and she supposed that was why she admired Simon so. He was able to fix people in ways she could scarcely imagine. Though he wasn't so good with the understanding them part.

Inara understood people, she understood them better than anyone Kaylee had ever met except for maybe the Captain. Which is why she didn't see why they couldn't fix the problems they were having.

Having the constant desire to fix things Kaylee couldn't let it go on. Which is why she was inside Inara's shuttle trying her best to explain what needed to be fixed and maybe how they could do it.

"You know the Captain doesn't mean what he says! He gets jealous of your clients and then stuff just blurts out but it's easy to fix it," Kaylee declared, waving her arms about as she paced the length of the shuttle.

"Oh?" Inara questioned, lifting an eyebrow inquisitively. Honestly, Kaylee was so very adorable when she got into her problem solving mode.

"Real easy," emphasized Kaylee, stopping in her pacing and pointing at Inara who formed a small amused smile at this gesture. "You just gotta make him understand the difference between work and pleasure."

"I see," drawled Inara, thoroughly delighting in the way Kaylee's cheeks reddened with embarrassment when she said the word pleasure. Rising to her feet, she took Kaylee's hands in her own and walking backwards she led them to the bed. Moving slow and deliberately, her hands slid an upwards path until they rested on Kaylee's shoulders. Then she gently pushed down until the mechanic was sitting down on the bed, peering up at her with wide and achingly innocent eyes. "Kaylee," Inara drew her name out slowly, just as slowly as the caress to the other woman's cheek. "Aren't there times when an engine simply cannot be repaired anymore? Where all of its parts are too worn and too tired and they're unable to work together anymore?"

"Yeah," admitted Kaylee with a frown. "But depending on the engine and the parts you can always come up with something. I mean, I was working on this XRK-9000 block and I figured it was shot but I got hold of this moxi manifold--"

Soft fingers pressed against her lips, ceasing her words and Kaylee looked up at Inara with puzzled eyes though she couldn't help but return the sweet smile that greeted her. "The Captain and I are like that broken engine that cannot be repaired, Kaylee."

"But maybe if you…" Kaylee tried again, only to find her words trailing off when Inara knelt before her.

Unbearably tender hands cupped her face and Inara murmured, "Some things can't be repaired. He and I are one of them."

Ducking her head, trying her best to hold back the tears that were suddenly falling, and not even understanding why they were falling in the first place, Kaylee said hoarsely, "I just want you to be happy. To be with someone you love."

"That you can fix," Inara whispered, her voice low and throaty and deliciously inviting. So much so that Kaylee couldn't help but lift her head and look into warm brown eyes.

"Me?" questioned Kaylee in a disbelieving squeak, her cheeks reddening once more.

"You," Inara enforced, her tones soft and loving but still so very amused at how impossibly adorable Kaylee could be. Even in circumstance such as these. Stroking a reddened cheek with the back of her hand, delighting in the softness of Kaylee's skin and charmed by the heat radiating off it, proof of the mechanic's embarrassment. "I want to be happy with you."

Silence. Long endless silence.

Then Kaylee's cheeks became the reddest yet and she offered a lopsided grin. "I think I can manage that," she drawled, leaning in and stopping with their lips just a breath apart.

"Of course you can," Inara chuckled, stroking smooth skin and pulling the other woman in for the first of many kisses. "You're good at fixing things."
