This makes me think of that saying that everybody's got their name on a bullet somewhere just waiting for it to find them.

Mal's surprise over these particular people's deaths is understandable. They weren't the fighters. If Zoe or Jayne had died, it would have been sad but to a certain extent something Mal would have always had in the back of his mind as a possibility. Everyone else on that ship was exactly that. On the ship. Protected.
