River twirled and spun on the riverbank, twice almost upsetting someone’s picnic, while Simon watched out of the corner of his eye. He didn’t want to stop her - it was still rare to see her happy like this, despite the progress she’d made - but he worried. He worried that she might fall into the river, that she might knock into someone, that they would be kidnapped again, that the Alliance would change their minds about letting them go free… about pretty much everything. Oddly enough, the only time he felt safe anymore was in space, on Serenity.

He was relieved when she stopped stock still, but it was short-lived. She turned and ran to him, excitement clear on her features, pointing at a couple in black robes. “Look, Simon!” she squealed, loudly enough for them to hear. “Shadow puppets, dancing on the wall!” She spun again and ran over to the couple.

Simon pushed himself up and hurried over for, prepared to apologize and drag his sister away before more damage was done, but it was too late. She stopped right in front of the woman’s face, far too close, and pointed right between her eyes. “This one looks like a bunny rabbit,” she declared.

Simon had to admit that the two sections of blonde hair which protruded from the woman’s face did vaguely resembled floppy bunny ears, but that was beside the point.

The woman snarled and grabbed River’s wrist. “Oh yeah, little girl? Well, you’re starting to look a lot like dinner.”

River was unconcerned. “Carnivorous bunny rabbit. White and fluffy and covered in blood. No matter how much you eat, you’ll never be full.”

The woman’s eye twitched, and her hand went into folds of dark cloth at her side. Her short blond companion, looking worried, laid a hand on her shoulder. “Larxene,” he hissed, while Simon caught up to them. “We’re drawing a lot of attention. We should go.”

“Yes, you should,” Simon agreed. “But the first thing you should do is take your hand off my sister. I came over ready to apologize for her behavior, but I don’t take kindly to people threatening her.”

“You love her,” said the boy, with something like awe in his voice. He shook his head. “We really have to go. We have a mission.”

Larxene looked mutinous, but she did let go. Simon curled his arm around River’s waist and watched as the two walked away.

River called out a parting shot; “Pinocchio was a real boy all along.” The boy turned his head slightly, then sped up his pace.

When they were gone, Simon turned to River. “Mei mei, you shouldn’t antagonize people like that. Especially not people with weapons.”

She just shrugged dismissively. “I could take her.”

Simon rubbed the bridge of his nose. It was going to be a long day.
