Wow

Last year, we had tornado watches every other week, it seemed. Weird for CT. Couple of funnel clouds here and there, too, though I don't recall any of them actually touching down. Apparently it's MA's turn, as Springfield got hit tonight. The AP has a video up of it crossing the CT river (thanks to lizziebelle for the link). Looks like if it were ( Read more... )

When I was living just north of nyc a tornado hit the building next door to where my father works. It ran along a parkway for a bit, too. It's been interesting watching that patch of land recover over the last five years.

And I agree, living here, I have not signed up for tornadoes or earthquakes. *shakes finger*

Wow. Yeah, you really don't expect them in such densely built-up areas as that.

Tornados happen everywhere, it is just that they may have different names.

Look for the greenish clouds, and listen to the air.

Any time you get a powerful storm with rotation you can get tornadoes.

It's like earthquakes, the midwest isnt supposed to have them according to common thought, but the reality is we have fault lines and they happen with a fair amaount of regularity. it's just that we are on an ancient sea bed and not granite...this means they are felt over a much wider area but just not as intense.

Oh, I know that intellectually. We just don't get them often, or badly when we do, so it's easy to develop the mindset that They Just Don't Happen Here.

Boston Globe said 4 died (and 40 injured) from the tornadoes yesterday. @_@

As I said to one of my local friends, if two funnel clouds and a tornado can form over Ward, Colorado (which is actually IN the mountains, and real mountains, not the little hills they have round here), then they can form anywhere. (That was such an awesome day, let me tell you.)

Local news outlet reminded us that there are about 2-3 tornadoes a year in the region. But, yeah, I don't think of this as a tornado prone place, either.

Damn. I'll edit the post accordingly. Thanks for the heads-up.

Oh, yeah, they can definitely form anywhere. It's just that they manage to build up more over flat land and generally cause more damage in flat regions. But that does leave the rest of us a bit complacent, I guess.
