Last year, we had tornado watches every other week, it seemed. Weird for CT. Couple of funnel clouds here and there, too, though I don't recall any of them actually touching down. Apparently it's MA's turn, as Springfield got hit tonight. The AP has a video up of it crossing the CT river

Look for the greenish clouds, and listen to the air.
Any time you get a powerful storm with rotation you can get tornadoes.
It's like earthquakes, the midwest isnt supposed to have them according to common thought, but the reality is we have fault lines and they happen with a fair amaount of regularity. it's just that we are on an ancient sea bed and not granite...this means they are felt over a much wider area but just not as intense.

As I said to one of my local friends, if two funnel clouds and a tornado can form over Ward, Colorado (which is actually IN the mountains, and real mountains, not the little hills they have round here), then they can form anywhere. (That was such an awesome day, let me tell you.)
Local news outlet reminded us that there are about 2-3 tornadoes a year in the region. But, yeah, I don't think of this as a tornado prone place, either.

Oh, yeah, they can definitely form anywhere. It's just that they manage to build up more over flat land and generally cause more damage in flat regions. But that does leave the rest of us a bit complacent, I guess.
