I haven't a fucking clue. All I know is I see English folk bemoaning and US folk crowing, which makes no fucking sense to me at all in the first place and even less if your lot didn't lose. (Note, again, I'm not saying this would mean we "won" in any meaningful fashion, because seriously, it couldn't.) I mean, I don't follow sports generally except second-hand, and really don't follow soccer, but usually when one side is pissing and moaning and the other seems to be celebrating, that tends to mean someone won and someone lost. If not, wtf happened?
Not earth shatteringly good, but not the end of the world either. England traditionally start slow in tournaments. It was a silly mistake that cost us a goal rather than actual ability of the US team, so I'd think US crowing was a bit short sighted and premature.
So they leave it at a draw in this? No extra ... whatever segments this game gets split into until someone wins?
I think the crowing is idiotic in any case. Nobody knows anything about this sport over here. Nobody cares until suddenly it's The World Cup and they have to get in on the hype. If we win anything or even just don't lose, it's not down to any virtue of our team, I shouldn't think.
Ignore the moaning English folk. This is one thing I hate about my own country, sometimes.
Both sides played well. And we scored a good goal, a brilliant goal that got knocked aside by the broadcasters in favour of constant footage of the cock up where our goalie accidentally dropped the ball into our own net! But, then, in my mind, he redeemed himself by performing a brilliant save in the second half.
If the goalie hadn't messed up in that one split-second, the English would all be jumping and down going "woowee, we played brilliantly!". But, because of that one mistake, suddenly they're convinced that the whole game was shit. If we didn't have occasional terrible weather, we'd be at a lost because we'd have nothing to moan about.
*sighs*
I love my team, always will, stupidly patriotic that I am *waves flag dejectedly*.
So need to watch Doctor Who now. Anything for James Corden *yay, James!* And I hear rumours of a half-nekkied shower scene with a certain Matt Smith...yay for revision healing remedies!
Oh, we can always find something to moan about on this side of the pond too. At least we can in New England. Maybe that's why it's called that? ;-)
I can understand the loyalty thing. That's the logic under which I'm a Patriots, Celtics, and Red Sox fan, and I suppose Bruins too, despite the fact I avoid actually watching any of the games whenever humanly possible. I'm from Boston, so I'm in their corner anyway.
Yes, this was a good ep! And yes, there is half-nekked Matt Smith, which didn't do much for me other than comedic effect, but if it helps charge the revision batteries, all the better!
Have to agree with you on the Matt Smith in a towel. Really not all that enticing.
There was a time when, being a Scot living in England, I would cheer on any team that was playing against them - the auld enemy and all that - but after quarter of a century down here, I've sort of mellowed to not really caring, unless they actually manage to do well, in which case I might condescend to vaguely acknowledge it, unless people get in my face about them doing well and Scotland never qualifying... I know, I know... It's sort of like the bit in GoF where Mrs Finnegan does the, "You'll be supporting Ireland, then?" thing.
And back to the ep... I find it strange that in order to compete against England's World Cup match, they turned to football. I mean, if we're watching Doctor Who while England is playing the US wouldn't that mean that we're not all that interested in the football side of things...
I still haven't got over my preference for Amy. MS just isn't DT who I think I will always pine for at least a bit.
