We've actually really liked our dual air beds, of course the bed looks a bit lopsided because UberGeek likes his fully inflated, and I need it a bit softer. If you deflate Patsfan's a little and inflate yours a tad, it might help. That's what we had to do, despite UberGeek's certainty that it was all on my side of the bed.
Fiddle with it while you can. If it doesn't work, have you ever had the "waveless" waterbeds? That worked for a long time for both Dave and I. The waveless aren't like riding a rowboat in the ocean and the heat is nice. I wouldn't go 99$ waveless, they are too hard, go down a step for maximum comfort. They also have the ones that are tubes and I think you can adjust them by how you fill them, too.
After the waterbeds (and we still miss the heated bed) we settled on a pillowtop mattress and a foam rubber topper (from Target)that is memory foam. We thought of the Temperpedic, but Dave read reviews a few years back about the odor a lot people found untenable so we opted out of that. The bed isn't perfect, but most nights it's pretty good. I may have to try the temperpedic though when my arthritis worsens.
Never have tried a waterbed. I'd be a little afraid to try one in this apartment, actually, with the recurrent termite problems, though that's probably just me being paranoid. Might be something to consider.
I can't do the Temperpedic thing. I've lain down on them for five minute demos and that's about all it takes for my back to start screeching.
The only thing I've heard about Temperpedic is that it absolutely kills the sex life. That whole absorbs motion thing - yeah - absorbs *all* motion, even that desired and wanted. R had a customer buying a select comfort because he and his wife couldn't live with the Temperpedic and not even three days later had someone else with the same problem.
It does have to be set right. Lay down on your back. Flat. Deflate that puppy down to about 20 or so (very few people are that level). Now start inflating it 5 points at a time until it just touchs your lower spine and you feel supported. That should be the correct setting for you. You could also be having pillow issues - I did.
You also could be someone who isn't comfortable on this kind of bed - there are people who aren't, that's why there is a return policy.

That gets me to 45, which does feel the most comfortable to me. But at that firmness I'm back to the arms falling asleep.

That's a good thought, particularly as my problem is a lot to do with my shoulders and how I lie on them and how they end up in relation to my neck. I should try another type of pillow and see if that helps. Thanks for the tip!

I hope you both manage a good night's sleep. There's nothing worse than waking up with back pain ... anywhere along the spine.

Thanks.

There really isn't.
