Super nervous about posting this one.
WARNINGS: This is based on several highly-publicized real-life stories about childhood abduction victims like Natascha Kampusch, Shawn Hornbeck, Elizabeth Smart, etc. In particular it is largely inspired by a boy named Steve Stayner. It may just be me, but the idea of a story based on the media circuses that trivialize what these kids went through makes me a little queasy. I almost didn't write this because of it, but in the end I went through with it because the more I thought about those media circuses the angrier I got at how disrespectful and irresponsibly obtuse they are about how these kids are coerced into staying with their captors. I debated writing original fiction about this, but in the end I went with fanfic, mainly because the other way felt too much like I was trying to compose a novelization of these kids which feld ickier (totally legitimate word) to me in a way I can't even explain.
tl;dr? Here are a list of the triggers you will find in this fic:
- Child abduction
- Non-con
- Sexual/Physical/Emotional/Child abuse
- Prostitution/Sexual exploitation of a minor
- ...Incest adjacent?
- Drug/Alcohol abuse
- Some language
- Violence
- Suicidal behaviour
- Internalized homophobia
- Bullying
- Inspired by real events
Eventually I hope this fic will have a sequel that will look at life after the child makes it back home, from the media shitheads, to the emotional recovery, etc. For now, this is the story of how one of these kids finds his way back home.
And the story:
