Your link is making me think of Mother of Demons by Eric Flint, although their carapaces weren't iron-containing, or at least weren't magnetic.

I like that book for pointing out that we can't even digest cellulose: it's a mild poison. What makes us think we could digest the sugars of another planet problem free if we still get genetic damage from lettuce?
