Half a Possibility by sheafrotherdon
~ PG. For wild_isis as a thank you for her donation to fire_fic Her prompt: "I'd like a fic of approximately 1,000 words, John/Rodney, established relationship, someone watching them (3rd person POV sort of thing)." Happy to oblige! With thanks, as ever, to dogeared for the indispensable beta. ♥

There are ways a man acts if he is a generous, loyal Athosian - Jinto's been learning his part since he was small. )

OH, this is so lovely. I loved seeing the relationship through Jinto's eyes. Someone who doesn't know them well at all, but sees things they wouldn't show anybody else.

This line was my favourite:

He watches Sheppard disappear into himself, weighed down by the duties that Teyla carries with greater grace, and he learns for the first time how guilt looks in a man's frown.

Just for what you said about Sheppard during Season 1 the other day ;D

I got the idea for this story after watching The Rising - so yes, Sheppard disappearing was totally on my mind! Well spotted :D

Thank you, sweets!

Aww, Jinto-fic. I've loved that little guy ever since his, "I am Jinto!," in Rising. :D

He sees that McKay refuses to leave Sheppard in isolation, and he loves him a little for that. He's not the only one. That is just lovely.

I love "I am Jinto!" too! And It was re-watching Rising the other day that gave me the idea for this.

Thank you, sweets!

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I love the idea of Jinto studying manhood by watching the men around him, the lessons he learns from John and from Rodney and from Carson and even from Kavanagh.

And out beyond the warm circle of the village fire's welcome, McKay takes Sheppard's hand, spied on by a boy-becoming-man who had never considered that this might be a man's choice too.

::flailing::

Beautiful.

Me, I like this internal summary: He studies compassion by watching Dr. Beckett's hands, learns everything he knows he wishes not to become by spending half a day with Kavanagh, grows curious along with Parrish as the botanist harvests seeds and saplings, handling each specimen with such care. It's a heady education, to sort and discard each quality before him as desirable or not, to see conflicts resolved with sharp words and silences, punches to the mouth.

I was thinking of the men in season one and what you'd take from each of them - what a heady mix for wee Jinto to see, in addition to all his Athosian role models!

Thank you, sweets!

I love the outsider perspective on established characters and here it is really well done. You always manage to fill even your shortest pieces with so much to take in, so much clear observation and perceptiveness.

Like this: He watches Sheppard disappear into himself, weighed down by the duties that Teyla carries with greater grace, and he learns for the first time how guilt looks in a man's frown.

Sharp and concise and saying more about both Sheppard and Teyla in one sentence than many other writers manage in entire stories.

Lovely.
