21.08.11 #2 | Like a Star - Corrine Bailey Rae

Just like a star across my sky.

Jaejoong was sitting on the swing in the park, his sketchbook opened on his lap. It was a sunny Sunday and kids were running around him cheerfully, playing tag. He smiled and continued sketching the kids on the sandbox who were building castles. As he concentrated on his drawing, he heard a commotion on the street. The mothers who were out on the park to watch over their children started whispering and Jaejoong turned to the road.

A familiar figure passed by, quickly but very visible like a shooting star, with black messy hair and pierced ears. He walked like he doesn’t give a fuck in the world, with chain dangling from his waist and hands on his pockets. He made a turn on the end of the road and disappeared from Jaejoong’s sight.

Jaejoong smiled and turned back to his sketchbook.

“Rainstorm is coming.”

Just like an angel off the page.

Jaejoong was right, that night from his room he could hear screams and things crashing on the floor from the house next to his. Doors slammed and the room just outside his window lit up. The man who passed by earlier sighed, stripped, and threw himself to the bed. Jaejoong noticed a pair of wings tattooed on his back.

Yawning, Jaejoong put down the book he was reading and went to sleep.

You have appeared to my life,

feel like I’ll never be the same.

“Kim Jaejoong.”

Jaejoong looked up from his sketchbook, as he was sitting on the same spot he had been the day before. This time, he was sketching the kids on the teeter-totter.

“Park Yoochun,” Jaejoong replied.

Yoochun pouted and took a seat at the empty swing next to Jaejoong. “Don’t you miss me at all?”

“Don’t you?”

“I do.”

Jaejoong continued sketching, “You never called. Not even once.”

“Would you pick up if I did?” Yoochun challenged.

Jaejoong turned to him and met the other’s eyes. Yoochun’s appearance had changed, a lot. His hair was longer and messier; black waves fell down to his neck but not long enough to reach his shoulder. He had three piercing on his left ear and one on his right. He wore eyeliner and ripped jeans, with black t-shirt that accentuated his slim body. His silver jewelries makes crinkling noises when he moves, not that it bothers Jaejoong that much.

On the other side, Jaejoong was the same. He still had that mushroom short cut, and the color of his hair was its natural brown. He had his thick-framed spectacles on, and he wore hoodies and normal jeans with sneakers. He didn’t change, and he wondered if Yoochun liked it that way, as if he had been waiting for Yoochun to come back.

But Jaejoong recognize that pair of brown orbs. Yoochun was still Yoochun deep inside; it made him smile.

“I’m sure I would if you have explanation,” he finally answered.

“I thought you’d understand even if I don’t.”

Jaejoong shrugged, “I thought I was your umbrella.”

“That time, I made up my mind to dance in the rain.”

“And you came back five years later because you think the rain stopped?”

Yoochun scoffed, “No, rainstorms here never stop.” Jaejoong rolled his eyes. Yoochun looked at Jaejoong right in the eye, “I missed my umbrella.”

“Ever thought that maybe you’ve lost it?”

Yoochun shook his head, “I’m sure I’d never lose it.”

“Maybe you’re wrong,” Jaejoong stood and shoved his hands to his pocket. His sketchbook was clasped on his armpit. “I’m only here for summer vacation, Yoochun. In a month I’ll be back to my college dormitory. We don’t go to the same school anymore, no longer hold the same dream.” Jaejoong smiled wryly as he remembered their old days, when he secretly noticed Yoochun had always had that rebellious side in him. “We’ve chosen different paths right when you decide to runaway from home.”

“Then I’ll go with you,” Yoochun hooked his hand on Jaejoong’s elbow.

“You didn’t even graduate junior high, Chunnie.”

“Did you graduate with the highest score in the city?” Yoochun smiled. “You were the smartest in high school too didn’t you?”

“You used to be…” Jaejoong sighed.

“Those numbers held no meaning to me.”

“It was everything to me.”

“My music is everything to me,” Yoochun stood and hugged Jaejoong from behind. “Like painting is everything to you.”

Jaejoong sighed and said nothing.

“I will debut next month. I just came to tell you that. If you don’t want me anymore then I’ll leave.” With that, Yoochun turned around and left.

Just like a song in my heart.

It was hard to avoid Yoochun, as the lad lived next to Jaejoong. He was blowing cigarette on his balcony when Jaejoong entered his bedroom. Their eyes met. Yoochun smiled when Jaejoong said nothing, putting the books he just brought on his table and walked out to his own balcony.

“Now I can easily jump over to your side that my legs are a lot longer,” Yoochun grinned as he leaned to the balcony fence.

“Don’t,” Jaejoong warned and leaned to his side of balcony fence, facing Yoochun. “Not when you smell like shit.”

“You still don’t smoke.” It wasn’t a question. Jaejoong remembered clearly when Yoochun started trying things he hated and hugged him smelling like alcohol and cigarette. It was the beginning of their downfall.

“And I don’t have piercing nor tattoo. I still stay away from drugs and alcohol, even in college.”

“Too smart for your own good, huh?” Yoochun blew smoke on his face and Jaejoong coughed. “That’s just like you, Jaejoong. My Jaejoong,” he sang. “Mine and mine only, Joongie~”

“Not yours anymore, Chunnie,” Jaejoong smiled sarcastically.

Yoochun’s lips pursed into a thin line, “What do you mean?”

Jaejoong shrugged, “I’ve had several boyfriends in the past.”

The next few seconds, Yoochun slammed the door back to his bedroom and closed his curtain.

Just like oil on my hands.

Jaejoong woke up when he felt his bed dipped. He groaned as he saw who sat on its edge. “What now, Chunnie?”

“How could you do this to me?” he said, orbs glistening with tears that threatened to spill. “These five years all I wanted to do was come home to you, the only home I ever had.”

Jaejoong scoffed and sat up, “You were the one who left me, if you’d remember. I went to sleep with you saying goodnight and the next morning you weren’t there; no phone calls, no texts, no letters. I am your best friend, but it doesn’t mean you can treat me as you please!”

Yoochun buried his face on his hands, “I couldn’t stand it, Jae. I couldn’t stand my parents anymore, and that moment all I could think of was to get out. I don’t want to stay, don’t want to be their perfect doll, don’t want to lead the life they designed for me.”

“I was a balcony away from you,” Jaejoong whispered, hurt apparent on his voice. “It wasn’t that hard to jump over even that time. You know my door is never locked.”

“Forgive me, please. I don’t care if the world turns its back on me, as long as I have you. Jaejoong, as long as I have you.” Yoochun started shaking and Jaejoong pulled him into a hug. “I’m sorry,” he whispered over and over against Jaejoong’s shoulder.

“I’m afraid it’s a little bit too late…” Jaejoong sighed.

Yoochun whimpered and the sound made him seemed so vulnerable, it broke Jaejoong’s heart.

“You’re never going to let me go, are you?”

Yoochun shook his head and clutched tighter to Jaejoong’s back. Jaejoong pulled Yoochun to the bed and held him until he stopped crying, until both of them fall asleep from exhaustion.

I wonder why it is,

I don’t argue like this with anyone but you.

“So, Yoochun’s back.”

Jaejoong nodded.

“Did you guys talk?”

He shrugged, unsure of what to reply.

His sister sighed, “Just remember how he used to mean so much.”

Jaejoong knew his sister was right.

I wonder why it is,

I wont let my guard down for anyone but you.

Yoochun leaned to capture Jaejoong’s lips, surprising the latter. Jaejoong took an involuntary step back and covered his mouth while Yoochun grinned, taking a step closer to Jaejoong.

“Remember our first kiss?” he asked innocently.

Jaejoong sighed and let Yoochun kiss him again. And again. And again, until he ran out of breath and his lips were burnt and swollen.

“I remember perfectly,” Yoochun whispered before kissing right below Jaejoong’s ear, leaving a small red mark. “You promised to be mine.”

You've got this look I can't describe,

You make me feel like I'm alive.

“Noona…”

“Hm?”

“If I go with Yoochun…what do you think?”

His noona burst out laughing, “Took you long enough.”

Jaejoong pouted, “You don’t mind?”

She shook her head, “No, he needs you. But make sure you do well in your studies and don’t forget who you are, the Jaejoong Yoochun loves.”

Jaejoong smiled and hugged his sister, “I love you, noona!”

When everything else is a fade,

Without a doubt you're on my side,

“Come with me?”

“I don’t know…”

“Jae…”

“I think staying in the dormitory is a lot easier than sharing apartment.”

“Jaeee~”

“And I have to take a bus to campus, how bothersome.”

“Jaejoong!” Yoochun pouted.

Jaejoong grinned and kissed him, “I’m kidding.”

Yoochun smiled and kissed back, “You see, after I debut, the rainstorm might only get worse…”

“Good thing you’ll have your umbrella, hm?” Jaejoong wrapped his arms around Yoochun’s waist.

Yoochun nodded and kissed him again, “Lucky me.”

We do it all the time,

Blowing out my mind.
