What an amazing life. He really was the greatest.

I'm not really a boxing fan, but Ali was so much more than that.

Few modern celebrities will achieve his stature, I think he will move from the halls of fame onto the pages of history.

His record as a boxer is impressive, his record as an advocate for equality is awe inspiring.

Wit, charm, talent and integrity. He may not have been perfect, but he was an astounding human being.

Amen indeed - Ali on his illness:

"Maybe my Parkinson's is God's way of reminding me what is important. It slowed me down and caused me to listen rather than talk. Actually, people pay more attention to me now because I don't talk as much."

and on his life:

"A man who views the world the same at 50 as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life."

The Greatest.

I'm not a boxing fan, but Ali did so much more than box. And he was a man of conviction, who actually stood by those convictions.

The BBC coverage is focussing on that as much as his boxing.

One article recalls its vote to name the Sports Personality of the Century at the end of the last century. Ali won - Hands down. His share of the vote totalled more than the combined votes for all the other nominated candidates put together.

You have to be more than a good boxer for that to happen.
