"I like your hair," you told her once, a life and half ago, withdrawing the tip of your tongue from the little round concavity of her navel. The sentence was so out of context, and pronounced in such a serious tone, that she burst into laughs, her belly under your chin shaken by little joyful spasms.
It was one of the few compliments you ever gave her - and not because you didn't mean to give her others, but because you didn't have enough time.
Now her hair is of a colour you don't recognize, and it's like the honey's got covered under a cascade of mud. You watch her roll a tuft around her finger, looking thoughtful, and maybe it's your memories suggesting what you want to see, but you like thinking that while she's doing so - while she lets go of her hair and the curl straightens immediately again - it's your voice speaking in her mind.
