Blued moon

It`s been so long since I updated that I`m not even going to try to fill in the gaps, because if I do I won`t ever actually write anything. I figure most people who`d care to hear my life story as of the last three months have already heard it anyway -- if not, you should complain to me directly and I`ll do what I can ( Read more... )

[cool ninja pose]
Hope you`re having fun too! (In a suitably piratical manner.) And I hope I get to see you somewhen this year -- good luck with classes etc.!

Japan is sugoku subarashii! And you should take everything you possibly can that`s taught by Prof. Jonas, because she didn`t get tenure and is LEAVING (yep, I`m still angry about that), so who knows if there will even be anyone teaching historical after next year (and syntax class will probably involve much less discussion of Christmas trolls).
And we should definitely catch up -- I want to hear about your summer travels! :)

Otouto-chan! [ducks] Yes, in approximately a week and a half I will inflict huge numbers of pictures upon you, until you are thoroughly sick of temples and pretty scenery. Be warned. Your stuff sounds awesome too, flyboy. Hope you`re getting excited about Penn! :)

Hey, social dragon. Knock 'em dead. ;) Can't wait until you come back in Sept!

Sometimes, you make me call to mind Stephenson's brief rant about badasses, and how once the position of Ultimate Badass has been taken, life relaxes a little for those who no longer need to compete...as long as someone's being as nerdy as you; I'm okay with being only a light-weight dork.

Ooh, I`m an Ultimate Nerd? And this from the person who used to dissect squid in the bathroom? That`s pretty exciting! Although honestly, I often feel out-nerded by most of my friends list. (This is a good thing; it spurs me to greater heights of nerdiness).
Also, you need to answer your phone! :)

i'm sad that i brought no ling books to read - i can hear my favorite, my beloved ergativity calling me from across the sea.

i find with japanese that i'm more excited (in my intermediate i-a way) with the ways of speaking without speaking - that is, delicately blowing people off. japanese is just as good as english, but i know how to do it in english (mostly) - now i learn how to be politely content-free in a new language!

Heh. Okay, I`m out-geeked for the moment. I shall retire gracefully and plot my next move. (Hmm, maybe if I started translating ancient Chinese poetry into Gaelic?...)
I`d argue that Japanese is actually better than English at conveying meaning without actual content (or native Japanese speakers are better at it, anyway). Which is definitely a lot of fun, and which is why (in reference to a previous post of yours) even if you`ve learned the fundamental grammar, the language is still interesting! Vocab can have interesting patterns too! Especially in a language with a complex honorific system that`s in the process of collapsing from an even richer one. (Possibly this is just my bent for historical linguistics coming out.)
And I just noticed that one of the articles on the bulletin board is about you -- おめでとう。:)

hardly out-geeked. you actually brought things, i only wish i did. and the fact that you can even contemplate the chinese-to-gaelic thing makes you win anyway.

japanese may very well be better, as you say. again, i know not.

and what can i say, i already repented of my "ok, done!" feeling, but that doesn't change the fact that i think of vocab as a by-the-way thing.

and there is an article? i should go see what it is... i was unaware.
