Donating blood can be a surreal experience at best, donating in in a renovated Bingo Hall filled with perky competent techs dressed in blood red and black (like giving blood to an assassin's guild) more so.  But donating blood while reading Mira Grant's Deadline is a downright freaky experience, especially if you are eyeballs deep in the scene with ( Read more... )

We're having a blood drive at work in a couple of weeks, and I'm hoping to break my streak of getting sick the day before the blood drive. Even though we don't get Timbits after giving blood, only cookies or crackers.

well, I understand that Timmy's is in the US now, you should ask them to sponsor it.

We have a Tim Horton's in the lobby of the building where I work. So I could just go down there after giving blood and buy my own Timbits.

(On another subject entirely, did Tanya tell you we cross paths at the Toronto train station a couple of weeks ago? It was the best surprised I'd had in a while.)

very cool, no see didn't but then she has been very punchy coming home lately. Last time she insisted on checking her e mail and fell asleep with it balancved precariously on her stomach while a cat tried to knock it off and take its place.

Just wanted to say that I squee every time someone mentions Deadline. I deliberately bought two copies. And there still aren't enough to go around.

Reading that while donating blood...sounds slightly terrifying.

Yup. We bought two copies so that neither one of us had to wait to read it. Am about to pass one of those copies on to a friend--the friend I gave my copy of wicked girls to--need a new copy of that now. :) It was a very surreal experiance reading it while giving blood, but to be honest it is such a powerful book that trying to do anything (like walking in a crowd or looking out across a dark field at night--zombie deer!)with it in my head is freaky.

Good for you for donating blood! It is a continual frustration to hubby and me that we're not allowed to donate any more. We lived in England for 3 years in the 80s, so are eternally banned from donating due to fear of mad cow disease. Of course, we did donate regularly the first 10 years we were home because they hadn't included our dates of residence then. So, our blood is already out in the world anyway.

so that's what has their knickers in a twist about the UK.

Yup, that's it. It's been over 20 years and no frothing at the mouth yet, so you'd think they'd drop it now. Military folks are pretty good, generally, about donating blood but there are an awful lot of us banned because of that. I tried to find out once whether it would affect organ donation, but I couldn't find anyone, all the way up to State level, who could tell me. sheesh

I don't think we get anything with red and green lights at my local blood center - which is probably a good thing after reading Feed and Deadline! At least you didn't scream when it stopped on red. You didn't, did you?

I don't think I could have managed the hardcopy of Deadline with one hand - it's heavy, thick, and I think a little narrower than standard page sizes, which makes it harder to turn the pages. But I read it easily on the nookcolor with one hand, and the new nook model (Simple Touch, I think they're calling it) is REALLY light and easy to manage. None of the other goodies the nookcolor has, though, so we're not sure whether we'll add a third nook to our collection.

I didn't scream although the urge to moan was intense--I did tell a bunch of people all about the book while I was there tho. Including the person reading chicken soup for the soul-I think a nice zombie book would go well with that.
