Finn's Wake 2-14-09

My, my, what a busy year 2009 has been! I no sooner got my feet back under me than I was taking off in a couple of different directions. Let me ‘splain. No, there is no time. I sum up.

I started a project two years ago, a museum for Vernon-born trombonist Jack Teagarden, the undisputed King of the Blues Trombone and one of the best trombone ( Read more... )

It's stuff like this that makes me truly glad I know you, Mark.

You really ARE a badass mofo; I hope you know that! I know you're too humble to shout it out loud, but I know everybody who's ever crossed your path would agree with me.

Trombones...they are the best! As a kid, my mom played a lot of jazz and blues. She had a Sweet Emma record recorded when she was doing a lot at Preservation Hall. Big Jim Robinson's playing always stuck out.

Being a ska geek, I always dug Don Drummond. Cynthia's favorite trombonist has always been Vinnie Nobile, from Bim Skala Bim.

I've only heard a little bit of Jack Teagarden, and didn't know he was from Vernon until you mentioned it.

With you, the collection is in good hands, and I wish you all the best in bringing it all back home to where it belongs. (And I'm glad you got to visit with Joe before his passing :( )

Thank you, Chris. You gotta promise me you'll come see the museum once it's open.

Re #3: Very odd.

Re #4: You should remember where the moose in Canada are! ;)

Cool stuff Mark. (I already commented on this in facebook too. Posting in multiple places does make stuff trickier. Incidentally, the cartoon link is correct here.)

Wow. Quite the project and the tale. I've been going to a lot of small town museums over the past year or so, I've yet to get into the "famous person from the small town" museums, but now that I know there are stories like this behind them, well, I'll bump it up on the agenda.

Huh. I've been in an area that was east of Toronto's longitude, not too far from the Canadian border, and there have been plenty of moose there. Didn't realize they didn't get that far north or west or whatever the deal is there.

(I knew one young woman in NH who hit a moose with her car and lived to tell the tale. If anyone needs tips on that, I've had them drilled into me.)

For a start, I'd do my best to get a piece on NPR. A news release to
the nation's jazz radio stations might not hurt either. Bound to be
some sympathetic ears out there, just a matter of getting the word out.

regards,
Craig
