“Are you gonna say something?” Warrick complained. He took a long gulp from
his beer and looked at Nick.

“About what?”
“You look like you’ve been dumped. You haven’t said a word all evening.”
“I haven’t been dumped!”
“But it’s coming soon?”
“I don’t know…. Greg went out.”
“So did we.”
“With Chad.”
“Who?”
“Chad.”
“Who’s that?”
“His friend. They’re out.”
“And?”
“I don’t trust that guy. Every time they’re somewhere together he’s all
over Greg.”
“You think Sanders’s gonna replace you?” Warrick grinned.

Nick didn’t answer. He didn’t even seem to listen.

“Are you asleep or something?”
“No…” Nick said slowly. “I was thinking. Greg told me last week his buddies
wanted to check out that new place…. Whatever it was….you know, the one
with that neon light badger on the roof.”
“Slutty Beaver?”
“I think it was Cheerful Beaver….”
“Close enough. And so what?”
“I’m leaving.” Nick emptied his beer and slammed it on the table.
“You’re gonna spy on them, aren’t you?”
“I just want to make sure that creep keeps his hands to himself.”

-----------------------------------

Nick looked at them from the other side of the room. They were sitting in their
table and talked eagerly. Finally Chad got up and went to the bar to chat up a
leggy blond.Nick’s relief was short lived. A twenty something guy approached
Greg. They talked for a while and Nick fumed finally his self control gave in
and he walked to their table.

“Take a hike.”
Greg and the guy turned to look at him. “You. Out.”
“Nick, what do you think you’re-” Greg started.
“Leave now and you’ll get to keep your current nose.”
The guy shrugged and left.

“What the hell was that?” Greg groaned.
“That guy was hitting on you!”
“That waitress on the diner is hitting on you every time you go there for
breakfast, and that doesn’t stop you from eating there.”
“That’s different!”
“No it’s not. And you weren’t invited to go along with us, so get out.”
“I’m not leaving you here with Chad.”

Greg leaned his elbows against he table and rubbed his eyes. “Tell me something.
Do you feel left out?”
“What do you mean?”
“Do you have any idea what it’s like to play third wheel with you and Warrick?”
“We don’t leave you out!”
“Nick, I haven’t had that much fun going out with you and your little wifey for
a long time, and now you managed to spoil the first night off I’ve had in two
weeks. Thanks a lot.” He got up and headed out. “Do me a favour. Next
time you wanna spend a fun night, spend it with Warrick and a blow-up
doll. That should be pretty close to what you’re used to.”

-----------------------------------

Greg slammed his locker shut and pulled his coat on. He had avoided Nick for
three days and screened his calls. Catherine walked in, giving him a weird look.

“What are you doing here?”
“I work here.”
“I mean what are you doing here now?”
“Because the shift starts in ten minutes.”
“Didn’t you get my message?”
“What message?”
“About your request to use your vacation days, starting today. Nick said he
would tell you.”
“I haven’t requested any time off.”
“What do you mean? I handled the papers myself.”
“I haven’t left any papers to you!”
“No, Nick brought them and….”

The same idea seemed to strike both of them at the same time.

“What’s going on with you two?”
“We went from a break to silence treatment to this. I have no idea what this is.”

“Greg?” Rachel from the reception came in covering her eyes with her hand.
“Are you decent?”

“Yeah, I’m wearing a fishnet top, string bikinis and flip-flops.” Greg deadpanned.
“Anyway….” She didn’t take the hand off her eyes. “Somebody left a message for you.
And before you ask, there’s no name.” She handed him a piece of paper and backed
to the door.

“What is it?” Catherine tried to read over his shoulder.
“Parking lot, nine PM.”
“You’re not going. That can be some total lunatic.”
“Don’t tell me you want me to stay here, even thought I’m not working? Even I’m
not that crazy about this job.” Greg took his back bag from his locked and marc-
hed out.

He didn’t make it to his car. A pair of big hands grabbed him from behind and pulled
him into a truck.
