CSI Las Vegas Main List Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Nick punched his pillow, and turned to his side. He rolled back on his back. He tried
to sleep on his belly. After three hour roll he decided to take bull by the horns. He
dialled a number and waited.
“Las Vegas crime lab, Rachel speaking.”
“It’s me, I need a number.”
“Try the phone book. What do you think I am?”
“Calm down. You said Anders had a new number, so I thought you probably have it.”
“You call me to get a guy’s number. Just my luck.”
“Do you have it or not?”
“Yeah, yeah, wait a sec.” She came back few minutes later and read the number.
“Okay, thanks.”
“It’s fine. What are you wearing?”
“None of your business.” Nick cut the call and dialled the number he had written down.
“Hello?”
“Darren? It’s me. Nick. Stokes.”
“Yeah, I remember.” Sleepiness in his voice didn’t cover the heavy layer of sarcasm.
“I was sleeping, what do you want?”
“I can’t sleep.”
“Take a pill.”
“That thing last night keeps me awake.”
“Then stay awake. I’m gonna hang up now.”
“No! Just listen to me. I want to talk about it, I think there was a misunderstanding-”
“There was nothing wrong with my understanding.”
“Would you listen? Can I come to your place?”
“No.”
“Well can you come to my place?”
“You’re not going to give up until I say yes, right?”
“Yep.”
“I should have guessed. I’ll be there in…. three hours.”
“You got something to do before that?”
“Yeah, it’s called sleeping.”
“Do you have my address? It’s-”
“Stokes. I’ll find it. Good night.” Darren cut the call.
Nick put his phone on the nightstand and laid back on his bed. He glanced at the
clock. It was little over twelve. Nick knew he wouldn’t get any sleep.
--------------------------------------------------
“You better have a good excuse for interrupting my sleep.” Darren grunted when
he walked in. Nick closed the door and followed him.
“You want coffee, I can-”
“I’m not supposed to be awake for three more hours, so Yes, I want coffee. As long
as it’s better than that slime they have at work.”
“It is.” Nick went to the kitchen and pulled a small paper bag from the top shelf.
He set the coffee maker, and went back to the living room.
Darren had his back to him and he had wrapped his arms tightly around himself.
“It’s weird how much older people can get in few years. Why did you start shaving
your head?”
“How do you know I haven’t always done that?”
His guest simply pointed to the wall. There was a group of framed pictures, including
some old photos of the CSI team.
“Oh… Right. Coffee’s ready in a minute.”
“Okay.” Darren sniffed the air. “Smells good.”
“Yeah, that’s Blue Hawaiian.”
“That’s surprising. I never would have pictured you as a coffee snob.”
“I’m not. I took the bag from work after that explosion. I never actually drank it,
I just kept it as a piece of memorabilia.”
“So why are you using it now?”
“I don’t know.” Nick shrugged.
Darren ran his hand through his hair and looked at Nick. “Why do we always end
up talking about him?”
“Sorry, I-”
“Don’t start.” Darren marched to the kitchen, pulled a mug from the cupboard and
poured himself some coffee from the half full pot.
“That’s why you left, didn’t you?”
“Well, usually when a man is hard and grinding against me, I expect it to be because
of me. And I have no intention to start competing with a ghost.”
“Darren, that was because of you. I got excited and then I opened my eyes and
I saw Greg’s face and…. It just slipped.”
“So first your reaction was about me and then you slipped from me to Greg?”
“No…. I’m not sure what it is. I wanted Greg and I now I want you and I have no
idea why.”
Darren looked at him over the brim of his mug. “I’ll say this just once so listen
carefully. If you’re hanging on to a dead man, you can do it without me. I’m not
gonna play anyone’s substitute.”
“Stop that!” Nick grabbed Darren and pressed a hard kiss on his lips. Without a
resistance he open his mouth and allowed Nick to attack his mouth. Darren pulled
him close, placing his hands on Nick`s flanks.
Their liplock was quickly turning serious and Nick’s hands dipped under Darren’s
shirt, caressing the skin of his back. Before Nick could realise what happened,
he was pushed away and Darren took few steps back.
“Don’t do that!” He looked absolutely horrified.
“What did I do…?”
“Don’t…..” The other man tried to catch his breath. “Sorry. I’m sorry.”
“What did I do?”
“I just… It’s an old thing. I just can’t stand when people touch me like that.”
“Sorry.”
“It’s… It’s not your fault.” He rubbed his eyes with his sleeve. “I think
I better go.”
“Please. Stay.” Nick wasn’t sure why he didn’t want to let him go, but he just
didn’t.“I wont touch you if you don’t want me to.”
Darren leaned against the wall, trying to control himself. After a while he opened
his eyes and simply stated: “Okay.”
“Okay?”
“Yeah, but…. I need to do something first.” He headed to the bedroom and Nick
followed. Darren pulled down the blinds and the curtains on top of them and the
whole room dived into darkness. “That’s better.” He walked carefully in the dark,
took Nick’s hand and pulled him down to the bed.
