Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3 Chapter 4 Chapter 5 “I told you.” Ryan gloated.
“I know.”
“I told you it was the husband.”
“I said that too.”
“No, you said the gardener did it.”
“Fine, you were right. Happy now?”
“Yep.”
“How are your folks? Still driving you mad?”
“They don’t even need to drive anymore. Just park to the spot. My mom still
thinks I’m gonna get back together with my ex and stay in Boston.”
“Sounds like that’s not about to happen.”
“Definitely not. He’s a nice guy, but we broke up for a reason. I don’t wanna
go back to that.”
“So, are you going to stay long?”
“No, I booked my flight for tomorrow. Can you pick me up from the airport?”
“Sure. What time?”
“10:15.”
“Okay.” Eric paused for a minute. “Why do I get this feeling you’re not telling
me something?”
“Why would I do that?”
“Why would you do that? Why do you do that?”
“Fine, I went to see a doctor here. I was supposed to go to my own doctor
when I come back, but I wanted to be sure I was right.”
“Right about what?”
“Remember what I said about my sight? How everyone looses it in their
own pace?”
“Yeah.”
“My pace is increasing.”
“You mean…”
“I noticed it and I just wanted a doctor to confirm it.”
“How are you doing?”
“I don’t know…. How can I be doing, there’s nothing to do.” Ryan took a
deep breath. “Listen… I’ll call you tomorrow, okay?”
“Okay.”
“And one more thing.”
“What?”
“Tell me you picked up my mail like you said.”
“I….”
“I’m serious. I didn’t tell my neighbors I was going out of town. If they see I
haven’t picked up my mail for a week, they’ll try to break down my door.”
“Don’t worry about it, I remembered.”
Ryan let out a sigh of relief. “Good. I’ll call you tomorrow. Bye.”
“Bye.”
Eric snapped his phone off, grabbed Ryan’s spare key from the coat rack and headed
to his car. Something was bothering him, but he wasn’t sure what it was. It wasn’t
Ryan’s mail… Then he figured out what it was. A nice guy. Ryan’s ex was a nice guy.
So, Ryan’s used to date a man. So what? So that, little voice reminded him.
----------------------------------------------
Eric pulled out a weeks load of mail from Ryan’s mailbox, and bounced up the stairs.
He let himself in to Ryan’s apartment, left the mail on the kitchen table and walked
to the bedroom. He had seen some photo albums there on his previous visits. He
pulled some of the older albums from the shelf and took them to the couch in the
living room.
The first album was full of family photos. Weddings, christenings, birthdays and
funerals. When he opened the next album he found what he was looking for. On
the first page was a picture of Ryan and a man Eric had never seen before. A very
nice looking man. He and Ryan were wrapped around each other and smiling to
the camera.
Eric looked at the picture. Ryan and that guy, whatever his name is, had met in
Boston, and it bothered him more than it should. Ryan said he was coming back.
They weren’t getting back together. Eric slammed the album against the coffee
table.
He was about to leave, when an urge hit him. He walked to Ryan’s bedroom and
looked around. It was tidy and organized, just like the rest of the apartment. Eric
kicked his shoes off and slipped under the covers. He pulled a pillow against his
face and fell asleep.
----------------------------------------------
“I just wanna unpack and go to sleep.” Ryan groaned.
“You could just unpack your stuff tomorrow.” Eric suggested.
“No, I couldn’t. If you leave them in the bag overnight, they’ll be all wrinkly.”
“So what? You love ironing, don’t you?”
“That doesn’t mean I deliberately try to make them wrinkly. And would you hurry
up, my grandma would move faster than that.”
“Would you seriously ask your Grandma to carry two big suitcases?”
“Who knows…” Ryan grinned. He took out his key and opened the door to his
apartment. “I’m gonna take a shower first, I want to scrub away the airplane
smell.”
“You want me to start unpacking?” Eric asked and smirked. He already knew
what the answer would be.
“No! Definitely no. You don’t have the technique for it. They’ll just end up
worse than they were before. You could make some coffee.”
“You think I can handle that?”
“Hopefully, if you really consentrate.” Ryan responded and closet the bathroom
door.
Eric started loading the coffee maker, closing his ears from the noises coming
from the bathroom. He could hear the water running. Ryan had to be naked by
now. Eric shook himself out of those thoughts and realized his daze must have
lasted longer than he thought. Half of the coffee grinds had ended up scattered
all over the tabletop.
“Are you ready?” Ryan’s voice echoed from the bathroom. The door opened
and he could hear soft footsteps going to the bedroom.
“Yeah, in a minute.” Eric yelled. He sat down and waited for the coffee. By the
time coffee was done, Ryan was still in his bedroom. “Don’t tell me you started
ironing.”
Eric knocked on the bedroom door. When he still couldn’t hear anything, he
pushed it open. Ryan was fast asleep. He was laying on the bed face down,
the towel still wrapped loosely around his waist. Eric’s attention became fixed
on his back. Little drops of water were sliding down from his damp hair. They
slowly trickled between his shoulder blades, and down his back. The droplets
finally disappeared under the towel, that was barely covering Ryan’s buttocks.
Eric was about to retrieve when Ryan let out a sleepy groan and turned his head
a bit to look at him. “Are you leaving?”
“Yeah, I’ll… I’ll let you get some rest.”
“Come here.” Ryan’s voice was thick with sleep.
“What?”
“Come here, for a minute.”
Eric hesitated for a moment, but gave up. He settled himself carefully on the
other side of the bed. Ryan turned to his side, wrapped his arm around Eric’s
waist and pressed his face to Eric’s shoulder.
“By the way…” Ryan murmured. “…we’re gonna have a long discussion in
the morning.”
“About what?”
“How you managed to mess up my bedcover like that when I was away.”
