“Hey, I’m walking here!”

“What?”
“That ambulance was aiming for me!” Eric exclaimed.
“Where are you?”
“At the hospital parking lot, they didn’t let me use my phone inside!”
“They let me use mine when I was there handling that axe murder…” Speed mused. “Maybe they just don’t like you.”
“You think? That fat nurse with the moustache asked me if I had escaped from the mental ward!”

“She may have a point there, you keep seeing ghosts-”
“There isn’t even a mental ward here! She was just using any excuse to get me out.”
“What did you do? Did you try flirting already?”
“Why would I flirt with her?”
“That’s what you usually do when things don’t go the way you’d like. You’ll try to flirt your way out of it or throw a huge temper tantrum.”
“I wouldn’t flirt with that walrus if she was the last human being alive. And when you’ve had as many nurses as I’ve had, that’s really saying something.”
“If she was the last human being alive, you’d be dead. I just got back to sleep, why are you calling!”

“They kicked me out of his room!”
“What did you do?”
“Nothing! I was there and suddenly all the machines go crazy. The they stopped, doctors come in and that nurse with the elephant gams kicked me out.”

“Is he still alive?”
“I think so, the machines went back to normal rhythm, but it was… I don’t know. I’ve been around patients enough to know that’s not normal.” Eric stepped out of the entryway to make room for the men coming in. He recognised the second man and grabbed him by the arm while the other one marched inside.

“Jackson?”

The man gave him a tired glance and a look of recognition showed up on his face.
“Did they call you too?”
“Who?”
“The doctors.” Jackson stated. “They called me said there was some change in his status.”
“What kinda change?”
“I don’t know, they didn’t want to talk about it on the on phone. I picked Ron up on the way here.” He pointed at the glass doors where the other man had been a moment before.

“That was him?” Eric asked. A gnawing feeling was eating his gut. “And why did they call you?”
“We’re both listed as his emergency contacts.” Jackson said and turned to leave. Eric grabbed him again and pulled him back.

“You two broke up a long time ago, you said it yourself. Why you?”
“Because we`re still friends? Because I`ve known him for years? Because his unckle trusts my judgement? Pick any one of them.” Jackson paused and glared at Eric up and down, drawing a silent conclusion. “Exactly how do you know him?”

“That’s none of your business.”
“You came to his room after visiting hours and now you’re here at this time in the morning. That’s not exactly what casual acquaintances do. We’re you involved with him?”
“You mean before…” Eric swallowed down the lump in his throat. “No. We weren’t. Now you.”
“What?”
“I told you, now you tell me. Was it really over between you and Wolfe?”

Jackson pulling his arm away from his grasp.
“If this hadn’t happened, we could be back together right now.” He took a step back and turned to leave. “And if the doctors are right and he’s coming out of his coma, we will be back together. Mark my words.”

He walked into the building and this time Eric didn’t try to stop him. Jackson’s word were echoing in his head till he managed to focus on the most important part. Doctors think he’s coming out of his coma.

“Eric? Are you there?”

Eric brought his phone back against his ear.
“Speed?”
“Don’t sound so surprised, you called me. And then you leave me hanging! I’ll send you my phone bill-”
“Sorry, but you won’t believe what’s going on.”
“Ghouls are taking over the hospital and they want you as their common-law concubine.”
“Not exactly. Wolfe’s waking up. At least the doctors think he is.”
“How do you know that if they kicked you out?”
“Guess who just walked in.”
“Doctors? Ambulance drivers? Undertakers who love to handle death flesh?”
“Wolfe’s uncle and his ex. The docs called them here because they think he’s about to wake up.”

“Did they tell you anything else?”
“No, it was more like a hit and run with love triangle mixed in. Without the love part.”
“You lost me.”
“He’s in there and I can’t even go the room.”
“Eric?”
“Yeah.”
“Can I be totally honest?”
“Normally when you start like that you’ll end up making threats and calling me names.”
“Only when you deserve it. Think really carefully: The guy’s been in coma for months. Now it’s possible he’s about to wake up and your main concern is that his ex is there with him. Does that sound normal?”

“I guess not…”
“And you only had one make-out session and that was when he wasn’t even in his own body. Leave jealousy to those who have a reason for it.”
“I’m not jealous! I just wanna be there if he’s waking up!”
“The ex is there and you’re outside yelling at me. That’s jealousy.”
“It’s not, it’s called awake most of the night really pissed off.

“Fine, call it what you want. But I got one piece of advice for you.”
“Just one?”
“If you’re planning to dress up like a nurse and sneak back in… remember the use enough padding for the chest and don’t under any circumstances shave your legs.”
“Why not?”
“All the nurses I’ve met have been so hairy they could replace a bearskin rug.”
“I’ve had different kinda experiences…” Eric grinned. “… remember Monica?”

“The blond or the redhead?”
“Blond Monica wasn’t a nurse, she was a cosmetician. She just used the same kinda white outfit.”
“I think the correct term now is aesthetician.”
“Anyway, the dark Monica was shaved all over…”
“You’ve been screwing so many nurses I’ve lost count a long time ago. Do they have a duty roster for your bed in the nurses lounge yet?”

“They weren’t all from the same hospital! And I do have my level, I don’t go after woman just because they’re nurses.”
“What about that male nurse with the stethoscope tattoo around his neck?” Speed laughed. “Let’s just end this here, because your sexlife is really not something I like to dive into this early in the morning. Knock down some security guard, take his uniform, lock the ex into the basement, snatch Wolfe from the hospital and keep him as your half-awake sex-slave.”

“Where did you get that idea?”
“Couldn’t sleep after your wake up call. Before you called and woke me up again… There was one of those old eighties soaps on all-night reruns, Dallas or Falcon’s Breast or Blots Branding or something. When you’re only half awake that stuff is actually pretty addictive.”
