“Kerr?” Catherine accosted the detective in the hallway. Both woman looked like they were ready to fall asleep right then  and there. “Anything new?”

“I thought you’d be home by now.”
“I should be. I just wanted to know the situation.”
“Nothing new. The dayshift is checking out the car, they just got it to the garage.”

“Excuse me?” A tiny woman in dirty overalls approached them. “We’re still working on the car, but I thought you’ll probably want to see this.” She handed few printed pages over to Kerr. “That’s the data from the GPS. After Sanders left his apartment he made two stops. First here in the lab and then at an apartment building.”
“Where?”
“That’s the address.” The woman pointed to the last page. “Now comes the good part. Guess who lives in that apartment building.”
“Who?”
“Andre Parson.”
“Same guy we just interviewed?”
“Yep. Fifteen minutes later the GPS was switched off.”

“And the guy just told us he hadn’t seen Sanders outside the lab.” Kerr nodded to Catherine. “Makes you wonder.”
“You think he realised Nick wasn’t serious about him and decided to delete the competition?”
“Why? Sanders kicked Stokes out.”
“True. And why would he go meet Parson?”
“Don’t know, but I’m gonna find out.” Kerr dug her phone from her pocket. “I’ll tell my boys to go pick him up. Excuse me.” She marched down the hallway, leaving Catherine alone. She was about to collect her things and leave when she spotted Warrick in the break room. She walked in, making him jump up.

“You should be sleeping, if you’re that jittery.”
“Have you heard the latest?” Warrick sat down in front of his laptop again.
“Yeah, they’re bringing Parson back for questioning.”
“Really?”
“What did you mean?”
“Somebody leaked it. It’s all over the place.” He turned the laptop so that Catherine could read the headline.

“Three-way drama leads to mystery: CSI disappears under suspicious circumstances.”
Catherine rubbed her aching temples. “Please tell me they didn’t print names.”
“They did. The local paper was the first and all the bigger ones followed.”
“Did you call Nick? We better warn him.”
“I already did. He’s stuck in his apartment.”
“Stuck?”
“There was some reporters waiting for him at the parking lot when he left. One of them asked some pretty stupid questions and he smacked him to the ground. That’s probably already on some news site.”
“This is getting worse and worse.”
“I know. Did you hear about the tips?”
“No. Anything useful?”
“No, just the usual. People have seen Sanders everywhere t the same time. Same thing happens every time they release pictures. People go nuts.”
“When did we release pictures?”
“We didn’t. Apparently the same person who leaked the story sold some photographs too. Look.” Warrick clicked few links and two photographs appeared on the screen. First one was from the lab Christmas party. Nick and Greg were posing happily next to the Christmas tree. The other photo was Parson’s personnel photo.

“How bad is it?” Catherine asked even thought she didn’t really want to hear the answer.
“Bad. They’re practically crucifying both Nick and Parson.”
“Have they published any theories yet?”
“Ton of them. One says Nick and Greg killed Sanders together and tried to mislead everyone with that car.”
“What else?”
“Parson killed Sanders to get Nick.”
“Stop there, I don’t want to hear any more.”
“Then you better not open any newspapers.”

-----------------------------------------

“Why did you lie to us?” Kerr leaned over the table. “We know you did.”

“I didn’t!” Parson was almost shivering. “I told you the truth.”
“You said you didn’t meet Mr. Sanders outside of the lab.”
“That’s right.”
“Then what was he doing at you apartment last night, just before he disappeared?”
“He wasn’t in my apartment!”
“We know he parked his car in front of the building and didn’t leave for fifteen minutes. What was he doing there, enjoying the sights?”
“I don’t know, but he wasn’t in my apartment!”

There was a knock on the door and a burly uniformed policeman came in. He gestured Kerr to follow him to the hallway. They came back few minutes later carrying a large plastic evidence bag, containing something black. Kerr placed in to the table.

“Does this look familiar?”
“What is that?”
“A black suitcase, or remains of it. And a name tag: Greg Sanders and his address.”
“What does that have to do with me?”
“One of your neighbours found this from behind the building. It’s empty.”
“So what?”
“He came to your building and disappeared. His bag was emptied and dumped to the alley behind your building. You had a motive to kill him and nobody can confirm your alibi.”
“That doesn’t prove anything. You’re talking about killing but you don’t even have a body!”
“You better hope there wont be a body.” Kerr snapped the voice recorder off and leaned closer to talk to him. “People outside these walls already think you’re a killer. And if you are, you’re gonna have every cop in the county after you.”
