this is probably my all around favorite of your fics. a shock, considering that OCs (particularly in this fandom) are almost condemned to be seen as unwanted intruders, mouth breathing over the shoulders of our cherished mulder and scully.
not the case here. joe is just the right mixture of 'his own character' and someone who can't help but feel as if his identity has been somewhat humbled by his exposure to these people who's lives have--well-- have a tendency of inadvertantly humbling (and/or diminishing) the lives of those around them. the fact that not only is the story written from an OC's POV, but that it begins and ends with joe - that it's his story, and only inadvertantly mulder and scully's story, was gutsy - it had me wondering how i felt about it, at times - but ultimately it was excellent in that it made the story feel self-possessed rather than necessarily half-baked. and i liked that joe had enough integrity as a character that i could pity him and feel grateful to him, while realizing that he did not pity himself or

I know it’s pretty unlikely that you are still monitoring this journal fifteen years after posting this, but this story popped back into my head this morning. I read this pre-livejournal, when fics were posted in plain text files on sites like gossamer and IOHO, and, here I am probably 20+ years after first reading this. It’s still an outstanding piece of writing, packing so much detail and realism into a short story
Also, around 12 years ago I walked past “Little Ben” on holiday in London, and knew what it was immediately!

Well, it might be iffy to bring M&S to Britain, but you definitely pulled it off beautifully.
Scully is the coolest. As is Mulder.
