James watched curiously as his two best friends, one man and one dog, disappeared into the residential section of Hogsmeade. Curious, he ditched Peter and veered off into a narrow alley, where he pulled the Invisibility Cloak out of his bag and wrapped it tightly around himself.

After checking that he wasn't going to run into anyone, he ducked down the street Remus and Padfoot had taken and followed at a safe distance. Eventually they reached the park and Remus sat while Padfoot ran around for a bit.

James leaned casually against a tree across the way, being sure to stay downwind of Padfoot, less the dog realizes he is there. He wondered, not for the first time, what was different between Remus and Sirius compared to the other Marauders.

To James, Sirius was like a brother, and their friendship was stronger than their bonds to their own families. Remus was the sounding board of the group, always willing to listen when James needed to rant and rave about Lily Evans, and only offering advice when James was being a dumbass. Peter hero-worshipped them and was the butt of every joke. Sirius and Remus, however, were always different with each other than the other Marauders were.

The last week was the best example that came to James' mind while he watched Padfoot chase his tail. Sirius, having randomly chosen to live as Padfoot for the majority of the day, was sleeping on Remus' bed every night; and to make matters more interesting, Remus let him, if not encouraged it by snapping his fingers to get the dog's attention when it was time for bed.

More than once James had woken in the middle of the night to see Padfoot's head resting comfortably on Remus' stomach and the other boy's hand buried in the dog's fur, both sleeping soundly. The nightmare induced thrashing from Remus' bed had all but stopped while the dog shared it, and James wondered idly if there was an underlying reason behind all of it.

Remus and Sirius, although they were still on the outs after the last full moon, had always been different. There was something about them that James had always noticed, but was never quite able to point out.

His ears perked up when he heard Remus whisper Sirius' name, and his eyes focused inquisitively on the pair when Padfoot ran over to the bench Remus was seated on. James flushed with embarrassment when Remus continued petting the dog even after Sirius had transformed back to himself.

It was moments like that, James thought to himself, moments when he felt like he was intruding on a private moment between two lovers. It was that kind of thing that he had always noticed between the pair. But they weren't together, he argued with himself, Sirius already had himself a bird.

With his ears still burning, James turned on his heel and walked away from the pair, still aware he was missing a large piece of the puzzle. If he stayed a moment longer, or turned back at any point, the last piece would have fallen into place when Remus moved his hand beneath Sirius' chin to draw him up into a gentle kiss.
