The next weekend marked the first Hogsmeade trip of the term. Sirius had spent his time as Padfoot for the remainder of the week, and so by the time Saturday rolled around, Remus wasn't surprised when the large black dog wanted to go into the village with him.
"Well, come on, then," he invited the dog, tangling his long, thin fingers in the soft scruff of Padfoot's neck. "I haven't got all day."
The dog barked once and barreled down the stairs into the common room, where he promptly ran over a tiny, blonde first year girl and started licking her furiously. She was shrieking and giggling in amusement by the time Remus reached the bottom of the stairs. The older boy couldn't do anything but watch and smile when he saw Padfoot slobbering all over the poor girl, until the dog realized he was there and ran back to his side.
"Sorry, Stephanie," Remus apologized with a grin. "He's a little enthusiastic sometimes."
"Is he yours, Remus?" she asked with big blue eyes. "He's amazing!"
Remus laughed at her excitement and the looks of amazement on the faces of the other first years. "Don't let him hear you say that," he warned. "I'll never get him trained that way."
Stephanie giggled from her spot on the floor. "Can I watch him today when you go to Hogsmeade?" she asked hopefully.
"You know, that's not a bad idea," Remus replied thoughtfully. He burst into laughter when Padfoot circled behind him and pushed against the backs of his knees, urging him towards the portrait hole, "but I think he really wants to go on his W-A-L-K." He winked at the little girl and let the dog push him out of the room.
Interesting, Remus mused as they walked down to the front of the castle. Stephanie was the girl Sirius was helping with her homework the other day. With a shrug of his shoulders, he pushed the thought out of his mind so he could check in with Filch and head down to the village.
Padfoot ran alongside the path, happily weaving in and out of the other students, bounding into piles of leaves, and even tripping Regulus Black before he ran back to walk innocently walk beside Remus.
The sandy-haired boy smiled and petted the dog on the head. "I can't take you into Zonko's or anything," he said conversationally to the dog, "but how do you fancy a walk in the park?"
Padfoot nodded his doggy head eagerly, causing Remus to laugh with genuine enjoyment. With their plans for the day decided, the pair broke away from the group of students heading toward the High Street and wandered back into the residential neighborhood where the park was located.
They walked in companionable silence, enjoying the peacefulness of the park and the quiet of being so far way from school and their classmates. Remus found a bench beneath a row of ancient trees that were still shedding their leaves and sat down heavily while he watched Padfoot chase a squirrel until he got distracted by chasing his tail.
"Sirius," he said softly, catching Padfoot's attention instantly.
The dog came over to him and sat between his knees so Remus would scratch his head. Remus closed his eyes at the comforting weight of Padfoot's head on his thigh and the short black hair running through his fingers, until the fur between his fingers became long, silky strands of raven-colored hair. When he opened his eyes, Sirius was sitting at his feet with his eyes closed and his cheek pressed against the inside of Remus' thigh.
He continued to stroke the long hair thoughtfully, until Sirius finally opened his eyes and looked up at him. Remus' fingers stilled almost immediately when their gazes met. Gray eyes held blue for what seemed like an eternity on the park bench, and in that moment, they both knew everything would be okay.
