Remus tapped his foot impatiently, eagerly waiting for Transfiguration to end so he could run to the dormitory for his Arithmancy textbook before his next class.
McGonagall had paired Remus and Sirius during class, and it took all of his self control not to request a different partner. Their falling out had been the topic of discussion for nearly a week, and so their fellow Gryffindors watched with morbid fascination as they wordlessly worked next to each other rather than with each other. Two hours of tense silence later, most of their classmates had stopped watching the pair and were focused on their own work.
The moment McGonagall dismissed them, Remus was running for the door to the surprise of the entire class. As one, the class turned to look at Sirius, once again confused to see Sirius quietly packing his bag without glancing up at anyone. Their whispers followed Sirius down the corridor, but the words never reached Remus’ ears because he was halfway to Gryffindor tower before Sirius had even left the classroom.
Remus charged into the Common Room and took the stairs to his dormitory two at a time. He hastily looked at his nightstand and the area around it, knocking other books aside in search for his Arithmancy book, to no avail. After searching under his immaculately clean bed, Remus sat back on his ankles with a sigh and glanced at his bed. There, behind the hangings near his pillows, was his Arithmancy text book and ripe, delicious-looking apple.
With a small smile, Remus shoved the book and apple into his bag and ran out of the room with just enough time to make it to class if he hurried.
Once in class, Remus opened his book to find a small scrap of parchment with a single sentence written on it in what was unmistakably Sirius’s messy penmanship: I may have upset the apple cart.
With a shake of his head he tucked the parchment away and turned his attention to the professor who had just called for everyone’s attention.
After class, when Remus finally had the opportunity to eat the apple, he discovered it was just as juicy and ripe as it had appeared. He savored the flavor, sucking on the juice to keep it from sliding down his fingers and coating them in a sticky layer of fruit. Sirius definitely knew how to pick the apples he loved, that was for certain, Remus mused as he munched happily on the sweet fruit.
