Part 1: I want to be a pirate!

Aiba stood outside a small shop in the heart of the town, debating whether or not to venture inside, hesitant now that he was actually there. He kept thinking back, trying to remember what the shop sold so that he could make up an excuse if Sho was wrong, though he was hardly ever wrong when it came to information about people. But for the life of him he couldn’t remember what was actually sold there. He peeked in, frowning softly. It didn’t look like a shady place where pirates learnt their trade, that’s for sure, or the sort of place that he’d formed in his head that it would look like. In fact it was probably one of the nicer buildings of the area, which meant that it looked like it got a few new coats of paint every so often instead of falling into disrepair. He chuckled, unable to resist. Of course it wouldn’t be a shady place, Sho would never willingly send him somewhere like that; he was more likely to scold him for even thinking about it.
“Can I help you?”

Aiba blinked, looking around to find a small man smiling at him, his head tilted to one side. He looked vaguely familiar to Aiba but he couldn’t think where from. “Sorry, I was just looking.” He pointed to the window, looking sheepish. “Just wondered if the owner was in that’s all.”

“Well, I’m here now so what do you need?”

Aiba stared at the man as he walked past him to open the door before it clicked where he knew him from. “…Ohno?”

“That would be me, but you can called me Satoshi. I’m sure I’ve told you that before…” Ohno chuckled, pushing open the door with his foot, his hands full of bags. “I just went out to scavenge supplies.” He held the door open for Aiba to come through with him, not at all fazed by him.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t recognise you.” Aiba shuffled bashfully into the shop, looking around with childish curiosity as he did so before turning back to watch Ohno. He frowned slightly at the figure. Whereas the shop was almost immaculate, in a cluttered but clean way, Ohno himself was covered in paint splattered overalls, even his nose and hair had some paint in it, making him look less like the owner of a well-kept shop and more like somebody you’d find in the shipyards keeping the ships ready to sail.

“I’m not surprised.” Ohno laughed, looking back up as he dropped everything behind the counter. “I normally make myself a bit tidier to come see Sho. He’d tell me off for not looking after myself if not.” He smiled as Aiba nodded in agreement. “So, what can I do for you?”

“Uhm…” Aiba bit his lip, looking around again. The shop was full to the brim with small pieces and artefacts. Many would call the place a junk store but Aiba could see the appeal behind all the little wares laid out for everyone to see; the coloured glass ornaments, the painted woodwork and carvings. It was the kind of place that if you were looking for something a little bit more unique you could probably find it. But still Aiba was finding it hard to picture the warmly smiling man behind the counter ransacking other ships and bringing the loot back to these rather calm and warm surroundings.

“Yes?”

“S-Sho sent me.” Aiba tried not to curse as he sounded nervous. If Ohno was a pirate and could train him he wasn’t going to be impressed by that. He licked his hips as Ohno nodded, waiting patiently for him to continue, though looking slightly confused. “He told me you were the person to come to if I was looking for-”

“Oh, I get it.” Any confusion left Ohno’s face as he grinned. “Lucky I trust Sho and his judgement otherwise I’d send you packing.” He pointed a finger at Aiba playfully. “Remember though. We may be here in the neutral zone but that doesn’t mean it’s safe. No naval command here just means that there’s no law enforcement for burglaries.” He pointed down the back of his shop where there was a ‘staff only’ sign. “Go through there; I’ll be there in a second.”

Aiba nodded, not really understanding what was going on but his hopes had risen at his words. He walked over to the door, looking over his shoulder to watch Ohno check the ‘closed’ sign was on the door before pushing through into the next room, squinting slightly in the half light.

“Sorry, the lamp must have gone out.” Ohno looked embarrassed as he scurried forwards and re-lit the lamps. “I was in here earlier making some new wares but then I had to go out and get some…” He paused for a second, as if he’d forgotten exactly what he’d gone to get before shrugging. “Anyway, I’m sure you don’t want to hear about that.”

“You make the things you sell?” Aiba beamed as Ohno nodded sheepishly. “Wow, you’re really good! I don’t mind hearing about them, why would you think I wouldn’t?”

Ohno stared at him for a second as if he couldn’t quite comprehend the bubbly attitude that Aiba had but liked it all the same. “Huh, not many people do actually care that’s all.” He shrugged, turning back to rummage through the boxes in the room. “Normally they just want to buy something and go; they don’t want to hear about what they’re buying.”

“Oh, is that why you’re quite quiet normally?”

“That and I’m normally surrounded by people who are much better at talking when I’m down at the tavern.” Ohno leant into a box, trying to reach something right in the back so that when he spoke again the sound echoed slightly. “I find it’s quite nice to just sit and absorb the atmosphere in a busy place like that, don’t you?”

“Uhh…” Aiba shrugged. “I guess, it does have a nice atmosphere. I just like to be part of it; I like to get to know everyone.”

“I figured that.” Ohno stood up straight, dusting himself off. “So, what is it you’re looking for exactly? This is what I’ve got right now but I’m sure if it’s not too difficult I can look into it for you.”

Aiba shuffled forwards, his mouth opening in a shocked ‘o’ at the gleaming gold and glittering gems that stared back at him from the box’s interior.

“Surprised?” Ohno smiled at the shocked nod he got in response. “I thought so, it didn’t seem like you believed Sho’s advice when you were going to ask me. You should have more faith in him.” He scolded playfully. “So now that we’ve got past the cover of my shop front and can talk without worrying about being overheard-”

“Wait, the cover of your shop?”

“Well more of a hobby I guess.” Ohno shrugged. “I like to make things and it’s a good way to get people to stop asking questions when you can pay all your bills on time. It helps that I’ve got friends selling the fish I catch as well so that I’ve got that to fall back on if people start getting suspicious. So, anyway, what are you looking for? Can you see it?” He tried to follow Aiba’s gaze though he was wearing a fairly dazed look on his face.

“What? No, no.” Aiba’s eyes widened as he realised what Ohno thought he was there for. “I’m not looking to buy stolen goods.” He looked back down at the box before looking up at a now worried Ohno, happy that this confirmed Sho’s words. “They are stolen, right?”

“Well…now I’m confused. What did Sho send you here for?” Ohno didn’t answer the question, looking around suddenly suspicious at the turn of events. “Was it really Sho who sent you?”

“You don’t trust me?” Aiba pouted, not liking this turn of events though he could hardly blame Ohno for his reaction. “Sho told me you could teach me how to become a pirate.”

“You want to be a pirate?”

“Yes.” Aiba nodded, glad that the suspicious cloud had lifted slightly from Ohno’s gaze. “I asked Sho where I could learn and he told me to come here.”

“Why would you want to be a pirate? It’s not like your family needs the money.” Ohno tilted his head at Aiba.

“It’s because he’s looking for a different kind of treasure. Isn’t that right, Masaki?” The two turned to see Nino standing in the doorway, his expression cat-like and smug. The smirk widened as Aiba blushed at his words.

“Oh, it’s you, Nino.” Ohno relaxed further as Nino shuffled into the room. “So he’s trustworthy then?”

“You don’t trust Masaki here?” Nino couldn’t help but laugh, especially when Aiba looked hurt by Ohno’s reaction to him. “Don’t worry, he’s a good friend. A bit simple but loyal none the less. And I do mean simple.” He glared at Aiba slightly. “When someone warns you to stay away from pirates they don’t mean that you’d be better off becoming one to join them.”

Aiba pouted. “But Nino-”

“But that was what Sho told me to say.” Nino smirked. “I on the other hand think it’ll be much more fun watching you fail.”

“You’re mean.” Aiba hmphed, before turning to Ohno. “Wait you know him?”

“See what I mean about simple?”

“Yeah, Nino’s my ‘land pirate’.” Ohno smirked at the protest he got from Nino, glad to help Aiba get his own back. “He thinks if he failed you won’t be able to do it.”

“He failed?”

“Yeah, he was doing fine until we actually got on the boat.” Ohno gave Nino an appraising look. “You know if you’d just stuck it out you’d have gotten used to the waves and your sea sickness would have abated.”

“Yeah but after how long?” Nino shivered at the thought of being on a boat. “I guess we’ll just have to see how well Masaki does, that is if you’re going to train him that is.”

Ohno shrugged. “If he’s trustworthy I’ll take him on and he’s got both you and Sho to back him up in that sense.” He turned to Aiba. “I don’t understand the circumstances or why you want to learn but sure I’ll train you up. And if I trust you by the end of it then maybe you can join my crew, otherwise you’re on your own from then on.”

“Why?”

“I only take on people I can trust. It makes sense when you think about it. We’re thieves and I’d rather not have my own crew stealing from me.” Ohno frowned softly. “Obviously it doesn’t always work out. You need a certain amount of people on a ship so you may have to recruit people you don’t know for some trips. But one day I’ll have a crew just full of people I trust.”

Aiba blinked, a sense of dejavu coming over him. “I’m sure someone else I know has said that before.” He frowned deeply. “But I can’t remember who…”

“Well if you remember, tell them to find me, k?” Ohno looked back at Nino. “Anyway, what do you mean ‘we’ll have to see’?”

“Well I can let you train Masaki but if you decide to add him to your crew…” Nino shrugged, turning away and going back out into the shop. “Well, Sho would kill me if I let him go alone.”

Ohno grinned, replacing the boxes he’d moved earlier. “I guess I’ll just have to train you up well then, Masaki. Because Nino was looking very promising as an addition to my crew before he gave up.” He held out a hand for Aiba to take. “Welcome aboard.”

“Glad to be here.” Aiba grabbed the hand held out to him, shaking it manically, though his thoughts were on meeting his arrogant pirate again and how this could help him.
