Nah, it's not. There's still a place for you to help; it's just not a place you'll enjoy. Just like some people work for Habitat for Humanity even though they don't enjoy physical labor, or some people work with the homeless even if they're squicked out by what they see, volunteering isn't always about you enjoying it. More often than not you probably won't; I certainly never did, and it's not because I'm a bad person. It's just because I didn't like doing it.

It comes down to a question not of whether or not there's a "place" for you in volunteering, but whether or not your desire to volunteer and do some good is worth your personal discomfort. If you really want to do it and believe that it's the right thing to do, then do. If your dislike of dealing with others in the environment is the stronger emotion, then don't. Neither choice is the right or wrong one; it's just a question of weighing your priorities.

In exercise methodology, I've always believed that (barring a specific goal), you should never do what you don't enjoy. It doesn't matter how much better running might be than, say, biking or rollerblading; if you don't like running, you won't keep doing it. Or at the very least, you'll come to hate it ( ... )
