That mind-control helmet looks awesome. John and I played the pushing game with the much-simplified version that was on display at a computer store here in NY--you both put on the helmets and compete by pushing a little ball back and forth. Whoever pushes the ball all the way to the other person wins. It was very zen--the calmer you were, the more control you had (needless to say, I won). This makes that look like tinker toys vs. the PSP, however.

As for Akira, I'm reserving judgment until I see what they're up to. It's an amazing story and, handled correctly, could make an incredible jump to live-action now that we have the CGI to support it. Western culture is finally ripe for that kind of apocalyptic vision (see: Children of Men, I Am Legend, five hundred other movies in the last five years) and I'm excited to see if they can deliver the same amazing intensity with a live-action version. It could flop, but hell, I think the attempt is worthwhile.

Three things that should cheer you up. thetaoofjoe2 February 21 2008, 16:07:09 UTC
Anyone who's seen a Leo film outside of Titanic knows that he's a talented actor. Nowhere near as bad as people like to make him out to be. As for an Akira movie, I don't know if I would hold my breath. They've been kicking this thing around for years, and haven't even wrote a script yet. And if they are loyal in their adaptation, what studio head would greenlight a $300 million franchise based on that? It's waaaay too abstract and existential to be an American studio film.

Also, planned director Ruairi Robinson is the same guy who made this short film:

Pretty good for a low-budget short, I have to say.

And if none of those tidbits cheered you up, check this out. Too bad that isn't footage from the upcoming sequel, but if that didn't at least make you smile, then a lap dance Faye Valentine herself couldn't crack that frown.
