My mom, you say? Why no, my husband appears to have been bitten by some kind of insect on his left calf that caused this. He's been to urgent care twice and has another followup tomorrow. If there is little or no improvement, then he is off to the hospital for IV meds. Good thoughts appreciated.

Scary boo boo. In fact it was a very serious infection causing redness over the entire lower half of his leg and it took 5 antibiotics to kill it.
