Re the Middle East, I am to the point of saying, "I don't CARE who started it. BOTH of you just STOP IT, NOW!"
Some people would accuse me of anti-Semitism for saying that. I accuse them, in return, of being playground bullies. And I spent far too much time being bullied to have any sympathy for other people who use that tactic.

First, a note of optimism: out on a date last week, my date and I started chatting about the middle east and the current state of affairs.. and we both cautiously agreed that US support of Israel was disproportionate in nearly all such cases. We both also agreed that unchecked support of Israel on the US's part doesn't make a whole lot of sense.. the Arab nations have all the oil. So why is the US so staunchly pro-Israel? We really couldn't find a rational reason.
I guess my point is that disagreement with US foreign policy in the region is more widespread than the news reports suggest. starcat_jewel's comment illustrates how delicate this issue is--one is often deathly affraid of seeming "anti-semetic" if they say anything against Israel. A few months back I spoke with an Israeli about the country's foreign policy, and probably was a little too candid about what I thought. I got my ass chewed out on that one ( ... )

This one I'm not so sure about honestly.. wouldn't unilateral support for Israel unite the Arab countries with a common cause? I think that was the impetus for the 1973 oil embargo? I've heard this debated many times, namely of how the Arab nations have failed to unite against the US regarding Israeli-Palestinian policy. I've also heard it said that the Arabs use Palestinians as an excuse to keep their populations in line.
Also, behind the NRA, Jews are the largest lobbying group in the U.S. They wield a lot of influence in Washington, and as I'm sure you know, over our media outlets as well. Yup, no disagreement there. One thing I've always found interesting was why the issue of the "right to exist" never gets talked about in this country. I ( ... )
