There are some pretty heavy scenes mixed in with the beauty and humor. Jack Hill did so much with extremely low budgets.

It is.... but not overly so.
The serious issues are blended nicely with funny (sometimes ridiculous) moments.

The scene where the a-hole leader of the gang throws money at his girlfriend for an abortion is quite dramatic. Also in that scene is the reading of a line that is priceless.

Don't wanna give too much away, but it is quite good.
