Re: your critique of the dialogue -- that actually isn't a Coen Brothers touch. Every line of dialogue, including Mattie's voice-over narration, is taken word-for-word from the novel. Honestly. I read the novel a couple years back, then re-read it just after watching this take, and they didn't make a single change. It's interesting to me that they went that route; talk about making an authentic adaptation.
See, not having seen the original OR read the novel does put me at a disadvantage, because then Angie can go and school me in a fact like this. Thanks for correcting me there!
HOWEVER, I will then add that there are ways to make immaculate grammar sound naturalistic. It did NOT sound natural here - the grammar seemed accentuated by the end of the film, as if the Coen's were drawing attention to it. Which was really getting on my nerves. It distracted me from everything else going on, bringing me out of the world of the film rather than drawing me further into it.
That was probably my biggest quibble with the film, though. It *was* good, and I *did* like it. I just had these stupid super high expectations for it that it could only fail to meet. My fault, really.
