I didn't like this movie when I first saw it. I remember thinking that it felt unfinished. I was young, though, and didn't really know much about film then. I think I might appreciate it much more now.
I don't know how much I *love* this movie, but it's very good. How young were you? I can easily see this as being a difficult film to appreciate.
I don't think it feels unfinished; actually, I think it wraps up very nicely but incredibly sadly. Almost the way it HAD to end. So definitely worth seeing again. But at some point. I don't think it's a film that you NEED TO WATCH OMG or anything like that.
I think you're on the right track. I believe this film got as close at it could for the times to saying that there was a romantic relationship there. I found the Rizzo character far more interesting than Voigt's. I don't know if it was intentional, but the hustler just came across as kind of bland to me (and yes, I realize I am saying that about a male prostitute).
