What other film or films would you equate it to? I'm trying to get a better read on it. And Richard Gere has it in him to interesting stuff; he's just rarely asked to DO interesting stuff!

I'd have to put it in the same league as Stir of Echoes and The Sixth Sense. Dripping with atmosphere, well-written characters confused by the strangeness surrounding them, stylistically interesting and beautifully filmed. (And if you haven't seen Stir of Echoes yet, I HIGHLY recommend that one as well -- it's perhaps the closest to this film stylistically.)
